Calibre not remembering column layout
I am wondering if I'm the only one having this problem or not.
I am running version 8.11 and I have one custom column called Read which is a Yes/No column. If I change the default view and move the read column to before the title column, close Calibre and re-open it, the column is not displayed at all. I have to click on the column header bar and set the display back to default before I can my custom column again. I have my Sony 505 hooked up when this happens. Am I doing something wrong for Calibre not to remember my custom column layout? ![]() |

Having the device connected, un-hides the "On Device" column. Read needs to be between that and the next (always visible) column. You might set the column (and restart Calibre) before connecting your device. There is only 1 column layout unlike the Menus that have separate layouts for with/without device. |

I've been having a similar problem with Calibre since v. 8.10. Today I upgraded to 8.11 in the hopes the situation had been fixed but alas, no love.
Prior to 8.10 When I opened Calibre without the device my columns, from left to right where thus: Read (Yes/No) - This is a user custom column. Title Author Series Etc, etc (you get me, yes?) When I attached my device (Sony Touch PRS 600) the toolbar changed as you would expect with the device connected and the database window only changed in one way - the "On Device" column would appear as the first column on the left, thusly: On Device Read Title Author Series Etc., etc. In preferences/ columns the "On Device" column had a check box that I could toggle on or off. NOW, in versions 8.10 and 8.11 the database window is the same as before when the device is not attached. However, when the device is attached the "Read" column collapses and when it is manually expanded there is no data in the column. It's empty. There is no "On Device" column at all, it just doesn't exist anywhere. At least 50% of the time even the far left side of the Title column is cut off from view and I can't scroll left to see it. When I open preferences I still have an "On Device" column, but there is still no check box to toggle it on and off. So, with my device attached I can no longer see at a glance what is on my device, nor can I see what I've read. Detaching the device sets Calibre back to the original view, with the "Read" column as the first column on the left and readily viewable (with data returned to the column). I hope I have made this clear and not just a more confusing mess. I'm here looking to see if there was a new function or change that I can't find that is the culprit or if this is a bug. If it's a bug, then I guess I need to figure out how to do bug reporting. Finally, and because this is my first post - Thank you to all the folks who work on this software and who volunteer their time to answer questions on this forum. Although I have been a lurker I have benefited from your efforts a great deal over the last year or two that I've been using Calibre. I know you volunteer and you don't have to, and I appreciate your trouble. Suz |

right click on any column header and select restore default layout. Then move your read column to the left, then connect the device.

Thanks for your quick response, Kovid!
I did as you suggest and the default layout was restored. With the "Read" column far to the right the data is visible. When I move it to the far left it remains visible until I connect the device and then once again the Read column collapses and when expanded the data is not visible and there is no "On Device" column. I disconnected the device and reset the default a second time. Without moving the Read column to the left I reconnected the device and I find that the Title column, which is the first column to the left, is almost completely obscured and there is no way to scroll that far to the left so I suspect that the issue isn't with the "Read" column so much as when the device is connected I am not able to view everything that is to the far left. Perhaps the "On Device" column is still there, I just can't see it. When I go into preferences and click on "Add Your Own Column" I see that "On Device" is still at the top of the list, but it still has no check box. |

Just curious, when was the last time you rebooted your machine.

Update:
Start Calibre Attach device THEN reset columns to default and all the columns become visible again. Any attempt to return configuration to custom will be ruined when the device is next attached as you once again must reset to default. This is a workaround until whatever causes it is fixed...but should I do a bug report or something for this? Pardon my ignorance of your processes, and thanks for the input. It isn't "ideal" but I can work with it. |

I cannot replicate this behavior, attaching a device has no effect on my custom column layout. Can you post some screenshots of what things look like when you attach a device.

MizSuz described something very similar to what I am seeing. Using the restore column default view does restore the view, but I'd like to keep what I had in the first place.
Hopefully this will show. I have before the hookup of my device after I dragged the column to the left. After the device hookup the read column is gone, and so is the on device column. Thanks a lot for the help. |

If I correctly understand the problem being reported, it is easily reproducible. Move the title column to the right until it is in column 3 or higher. Select a book, edit metadata, escape. The pane will have been scrolled to make title the second visible column. Scroll left to show the first column, edit metadata & escape again, and the pane scrolls again.

The pictures posted by the OP are an exact duplicate of what I am experiencing.
I just checked plug ins for the view manager plug in as inquired by the ducks. I did this check by going to preferences, plug ins. I saw no top level "view manager" plug in. I have not installed any custom plug ins, in fact the only mods I've ever done to calibre besides customizing the database window view and adding a couple of custom columns is modified the css style sheet on the reader to force a font selection, minimize margins, and create a more soothing background color (on the reader only). Other than those changes my Calibre is as installed. Is there a deeper place to look for the view manager plug in than top level? Please direct and I'll be happy to check - but it wouldn't be something I installed as I have never installed any plug ins. Thanks again! |
