I presume this applies to all forms of Digital Media:

Internet users who share pirated movies and music online may soon be getting an unpleasant surprise: Warnings from their cable and phone providers that detail alleged copyright infringement and threaten to slow their Web connections if they don't stop.

The new so-called Copyright Alert System was created by a coalition of major film studios, record labels and Internet-service providers, who agreed to guidelines for identifying and notifying users who violate copyrights.

Among the ISPs that have pledged to implement the new policy are Comcast Corp., AT&T Inc., Time Warner Cable Inc., Cablevision Systems Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc......

This is an interesting approach. I personally believe that while many people pirate just to be cheap, as many people pirate to protest to what they believe to be an unjust price or exclusion of service.

It's worth following to see where it all shakes out.

All of those companies appearing proactive without actually doing anything to jeopardize business.

So far, it applies only to certain ISPs (all of which are either owned by, or own, media companies). It's entirely voluntary, and the press release is full of weasel words to boot. It's all noise, with no apparent substance.

Indeed, apparently a smarter approach. Must be some new hires with new ideas that came onboard to join their efforts.

The consumer advocacy and protection groups will indeed watch this carefully as for sure, the implementation will be critical.

EDIT: ^ yes. The ISPs are clearly seeking to cover their own asses with everyone possible. Good point taustin.

Difference is, this time, perhaps the ISPs really are getting involved [however tangentially] and therein lies the danger...
