Self Published books
I know amazon allows for self publishing of books but what other companies provide for this: Barns and Nobels, Sony, Kobo Books, Books-A-Million?

Smashwords.... and they will submit to Sony, Kobo, and Apple, among others.

Almost all of them. Authors can upload their work directly to Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I believe Sony and Kobo both have a distribution agreement with Smashwords, so you'll find self-published books there, as well.

Amazon and Nook were extremely easy once you get down the formatting issues. The agreements are pretty straightforward as well.

You do have to have a US bank account, so it's not a universal solution. It's quite a pain for foreign publishers - Neil Marr of BeWrite Books has described the process/hoops he had to go through.
