TOC Question

Ok heres the situation. I have a 5 chapter ebook made through indesign. I made 5 different files for each chapter for the purpose of producing each ebook to be under 300kb in size per epub. My question is, is it possible to create a TOC that could link to an epub?

TOC
Chapter 1 <---- links to chapter1.epub
Chapter 2 <---- links to chapter2.epub
Chapter 3 <---- links to chapter3.epub
Chapter 4 <---- links to chapter4.epub
Chapter 5 <---- links to chapter5.epub

Is this possible? Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Why not make one epub with the five chapters? The size limit is per xhtml file, not epub...

It will only be possible in ePub 3-compliant readers, which is none as yet.

Hi Toxaris, thanks for the quick response. I somehow get the picture. Can you explain it a bit further when you say its per xhtml file? What I did was create my layouts in InDesign and divided it into chapters. Logically i would export them each in their own .epub eg. chap1.epub, chap2.epub so on...can you just give me a quick tip on how i would accomplish the one you mentioned? Did you mean that i redo my layouts and put them all together in InDesign ergo into one export? Sorry for the noob question. This is totally new to me. your help is much much appreciated by the way.

@charleski
Thanks for the info on that.

By the way, to make it a valid epub, what I do is to export the file to dreamweaver or as an html file, then import the html to Sigil and validate/edit it from there. Its way easier than to export the indd file directly to epub which results to a lot of errors. How do i do it in such a way that it comes as one single ebook file with 5 chapters(1 xhtml per chapter)?

I suspect it's easiest to import it into Sigil as a single chapter (one big xhtml file), and then split it up inside Sigil.

Insert->Chapter Break

Old versions of InDesign did have a variety of problems, but the current one does at least export the xhtml correctly, though you do need to edit the css.

But to be honest, rather than doing it this roundabout way why not do it all in Sigil from scratch?

You can import the seperate (x)html files into Sigil. Each chapter a seperate file. Generate the TOC and presto.
As long as the (x)html file is under about 270 kb uncompressed, there is no issue. And believe me, 270 kb uncompressed is a lot of text.

Toxaris: Can you really do that? I can see how to create a new blank chapter, but I couldn't find how to add a new chapter by importing an xhtml file.

If it was supposed to be used that way, I'd have thought you'd be able to bulk-import several xhtml files at a time. Although it's not critical in this example.

Edited: for tone
