hey all: got a quick question regarding some files that seem to have been created by calibre

Can someone tell me what a Pickle file is?

and what its generated for?

The pickle module implements a fundamental, but powerful algorithm for serializing and de-serializing a Python object structure. “Pickling” is the process whereby a Python object hierarchy is converted into a byte stream, and “unpickling” is the inverse operation, whereby a byte stream is converted back into an object hierarchy. Thank you, I wont pretend to understand that. Ok, So why has this popped up? I assume its a background thing. Just not sure why its shown up now? is it something to do with an error or anything else that I need to be concerned about? Because I have never seen this before and it was there in a window so just curious

Did you recently set (after using a Vanilla Calibre) some preferences or save templates?
I have had one (and had it regenerate after I tampered with it trying to clear some bad templates). Lost all my settings

Not that I am aware of. Did not know i could set templates. But I did dump the calibre information that was placed on my touch in effort to see if i could force a pick up of the covers. Could that have caused it? I saved copies of my files so i could replace it if it did not work. Thats preety much the only thing I tried.

You do not mention WHERE you saw this file being generated? It would be quite normal to see such files generated in the Calibre configuration folder as they are a way of storing a python object in a format that easily be reloaded later.

It was a temp file the software opened up on the main screen of the computer. exact location not sure, certain file location was c:\.......\tmp

But this has never opend up before this.

But at any rate Calibre seems to be running fine.

In simple terms, a pickle file is just a file that holds data in a way that makes it easy to get in and back out. Calibre uses many of them, and you'll see them in your config area and as temp files.

You are welcome. If you need more info, just ask or you may find relevant info with a search. I've seen Kovid post info on how to get the contents of pickle file displayed in human readable format (and I've got some code that will do that, too).
