E-reader and wireless router a pain?

I ordered a n150 router so I can get a Nook.to use with it..As a router newbie are they hard to set up with everything I have which includes vonage and my cable modem...Kind of the reason I've held off on a reader with wifi only.

I use a Netgear wifi router with my system for both my laptop and my two Kindles. If you enter your router password into your eReader when it asks for it, you'll have no trouble. If you also use the MAC address filter in your router, you'll also have to enter the allowable MAC address of your eReader as well, but that's no problem. Once it's set up, it's totally transparent and you're online anytime you turn WiFi on in your eReader.

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but most routers now have some sort of "express" setup option which will take care of the most common settings, including securing your wireless and assigning a password.

Some ISPs require a specific router configuration for the internet to work properly once the modem is connected to the router. If this is the case, your cable company's web site should have any info you need on what settings need to be changed on your new router.

In my experience, they either are a breeze to set up, or they are a royal pain in the neck. And there is no predicting which situation will occur. May Lady Luck be with you!

Hey, J.

Did you do Mystery Science Theater 3000? I loved that show.

This is an older post, but bears comment. The newer routers such as the LinkSys E series are 'no brainers' to set up. You insert the CD, turn the router on, insert cables, and the automated installation does the rest, transparently for a desktop PC. If you want to restrict access for WiFi (laptops and eReaders), you can go into "Advanced" setup which gives you access to the MAC filter table where you can block any but your own devices. My older LinkSys WRT150N just died and it took less than 10 minutes to install a new router (a LinkSys E1200) on my Speedstream DSL modem. The wireless installation to the laptop was as simple as creating a "key" using a USB drive and inserting it into the laptop USB port. Everything is automated for the non-techies, but all the other settings are available to tweak if you know what you need and what you're doing.
