What's wrong?

Mobi file looks good when viewed in Calibre but when I view it on my Kindle it's different. Every so often these words appear. Example:
"I don't know--beyond tears." is the way it should be, but on my Kindle it's
I don't 20 Harlan Coben know--beyond tears.
Started at "1 Harlan Coben" and goes up numerically every so many pages.
What did I do wrong?

Those are the Page Headers (right and/or Left) from a scan OCR

You need to set a headers and footers removal pattern in the conversion tools

I don't use that feature. (usually OCR is so bad that a single pattern won't do).
I Use Sigil tho allow a wysiwyg (many) S&R to really clean a EPUB of OCR artifacts.

BTW you should have seen those in ANY viewer, not just on your device

If you have typed it exactly as it appears (spaces right etc.) putting the following line in search and replace

\d+ Harlan Coben

Should fix one header. (half of the headers in the book)

But there is likely a corresponding header on every second page with the book title and page numbers following it.

Many PDF's are like this and if you have bought a pdf that converts this way cropping the pdf is often less bother.

Graham,

You should complain to the publisher - such artifacts are not acceptible in eBooks.
