I am redoing my ebooks as RTF and converting them to Epubs. The problem comes to when I put them on my Nook and go to navigate through chapters and the Nook isn't picking them up. I have tried setting the chapter titles as a H1 format, inputting my own page breaks, and have been through most if not all of the topics on here that correspond to my issue. And trying the fix that was there. I have also done the RTF to Epub tutorial, and know I have the <p> setting (which isn't the easiest to work with) but I can't get it to change to the easier format at all.
How do I fix this problem? Is it a matter of formatting the RTF correctly (I really don't want to do the HTML conversion or using Sigil, but Sigil I'm more open too).Help? |

@JaredKitty,
You don't say how you have created your RTFs, but if it is with MSWord and you have styled each of your chapter headings with the built-in 'Heading 1' style, then all you should need to do is make sure that when you do an RTF-to-EPUB conversion in Calibre the Structure Detection - Detect chapters at option is set to //h:h1. |

I am creating the RTF with 2007 MS Word. I have done both opening it in Sigil and pressing f7 which doesn't bring up anything in the TOC box. And set the chapter detection setting to //h:h1. Neither seems to work. When I look at the code in Sigil the Chapter headings look like this: <p class="calibre2"><span class="none">Chapter I</span></p>
I have all the Chapter headings formatted with the H1 style in Microsoft word and save it as RTF, it almost seems like it's not keeping the formatting or changing it to something different either when I save or covert. Could it possibly be a setting in MS word that is missing? |

I was able to get the TOC to detect the chapters using Sigil and the heading change. Awesome! Now the only problem is my Nook is not picking up the chapters so I can navigate through books that way. Any ideas?

![]() and resend, useing that version, to the nook ![]() Sigil creates a 'EPUB Standard' TOC. The Nook should read that without issue. |

I did, I will try it again later to see if maybe it was just a weird glitch. I'm at the point where now that i have the chapters working, I don't mind if the navigation chapters doesn't. Thanks for help with this! If I decided to change my chapter format to say the heading 4 or 5, I would change that //h:h4 or //h:h5 right?

I see you've managed to get the result you want in Sigil. If you're happy with that, all well and good. If you want to try to get to the bottom of your RTF problem then if you want to post a small sample of your RTF here (be careful about copyright) I would be happy to have a better look. Something you could try for yourself is to save the RTF as webpage-filtered from Word. Then open the HTML file in a text editor and look for the chapter headings you believe you styled as Heading 1. What does the html look like? If you applied the style correctly they should look something like Code:
<h1>Chapter I</h1> Last edited by jackie_w; 07-01-2011 at 08:17 PM. |

I grabbed a bit off of Project Gutenberg website and redid it the way I am doing my rtfs. I'm happy with the way I'm making it but if you want to take a peak that'd be nice.

This RTF converts fine for me. See attached screencap. I've also attached the converted epub.
I'm also attaching the job details from my conversion. You could check it against your own conversion to see if you can tell where the differences in conversion settings might be. Spoiler:

Thanks for all the help! I did get everything to work properly. To get the nook to recongize the chapters there is a profile when you convert the book and that seems to have done the trick! Thanks for the output file too, now I know what to look for!
