pdfs and kindle 3

should i always convert pdfs into mobi with calibre for my kindle?

also, whenever i convert the pdf, the page number always shows up somewhere on the page when i read from the kindle.... i'm assuming this is normal for pdf right and probably no way to get rid of it?

btw, a friend says that i can use kindle to read epub files if i just put the epub files in a folder and move the folder to my kindle reader. is this true?

Converting PDFs may cause lots of problems. PDF is a horrible format to use as a basis for conversion. The page number was probably written onto each page of the PDF, and that is why you see it in the converted file, even if it winds up in the middle of the "page" on your kindle.

No, Kindles do not support ePubs at all currently. Those you still need to convert, BUT they will convert much much better to mobi than your PDFs.

This program will let you crop off the page numbers before you convert.

Works well for me, but other people have said they have problems with it, so it might be highly dependent on your own system. I think you can also crop the page numbers in Calibre, but you would be better off asking in the Calibre group about that.

You can read .epub's installing the Duokan, it's an alternative firmware for Kindle, but I think only the ones without DRM and not sure how well it reads.

I've been using duokan for months, it displays epubs fine. Also you can send pdf's to your kindle email and put convert in the subject line, it sends the pdf through a simple conversion I think and might make the pdf flowably readable, otherwise I would suggest cropping pdf's and reading them in landscape orientation on the Kindle 3.
