Hello everyone. I just ordered the pocket edge from Amazon, it will come in a few days. I kinda need some help with some things.
here are my questions about it: -Does anyone know where I can find a 16 gb microsd card for it under $20 (if possible?) I know I will need it. -Do you think that Gelaskins are worth it? I LOVE the NYC design, but it is kinda pricy. Is it good quality and worth it? -Anything else I should get that is important? -This might seem like a stupid question, but I have been reading all over and I still don't understand what is Dingo and Froyo and Ermine? I think I could find out how to use it with a few hours of playing. ![]() If there is anything else worth knowing, please tell. Thank you SOOOO much. ![]() Last edited by doggie; 06-20-2011 at 11:34 AM. |

Doggie,
Dingo...Froyo...Ermine... Here's my understanding of this, based on reading the original forums...if you are a new user you probably want to invest some time in going through them, they are incredibly helpful. Dingo = the enTourage operating system (OS) that comes factory installed on your device. Froyo=Google's Android 2.2 version. Ermine = enTourage's beta update to Dingo that includes the Froyo updates. When Google updates their android OS, we can't just update our devices because the Android operating system does not include what is needed to also operate the eink side of our Edges. So, when Google came out with Froyo (Android 2.2), entourage had to update their OS. So, the latest and greatest OS for our edge's is Ermine...it has incorporated Android 2.2 and the eink. But my understanding is that there is only a beta version of Ermine available, they never released a final version. Before you update to Ermine, make sure you read the old forums AND posts here at mobileread. Ermine was not perfected before the company closed, so make sure you are comfortable with any issues before you load it. I am running Ermine on my PE and aside for some slight quirkiness on the eink side (a little slow) I really like it. |

So for the SD card, I hope it works because I just ordered it yesterday. :-) I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Welcome to the forums, I hope you enjoy your PE!!, Most of your questions were already answered, but I'll just affirm what was already said in that every SD card should work. Also, as others have said, Froyo is googles name for android 2.2, and Ermine is Entourages name for their modified froyo with support for the eink and the entourage app store... ENJOY!!!

Just to add to the previous comments, Froyo was actually a huge Android update. While it contains a number of new features, the most important is the addition of a JIT compiler, which considerably speeds up performance. You will immediately be able to notice the difference. While the Ermine update contains some minor bugs, most people seem pleased with the decision to install it. Plus, the community has found some ways to work around some of these problems.
Just be aware: any time you monkey with the OS, you have a chance to seriously mess things up. Some people have experienced the dreaded "white screen of death" (WSOD) upon updating to Ermine, although my private suspicion is this problem is more likely related to a hardware problem. In addition, one of the members of the forum has completely messed up his device by fiddling with some system files. I highly recommend updating to Ermine, but just be aware of the risks before you take the leap! |

Hmm... Updating to Ermie sounds like jailbreaking your Ipod. Risky, but worth it. I think I will update it when it comes in.

On my EE and maybe also on PE someone with Ermine has a problem with hibernation.
You can find notices about it in the archived forum. Personally I wasn't able to resolve this issues. So never close lid, when I need I must power off my enTourage eDGe [EE]. Excluding this [big] problem, for me, Ermine is a good upgrade. |

I have Ermine on all of mine. My PEs are fine with hibernation if I close the lid, but although my EE will allow me to hibernate briefly and then come back, if I leave it hibernating too long I have to pop the battery and re-start. One warning - on the PE always hibernate by closing the lid. Don't use the hibernate option from the power button or you will have the fun of having to reload everything. It's not fatal (although it may initially seem so), but it is a royal pain.

@ EdgeLover523 et al.
In my EE happens exactly the same. When I close lid I have max 1-2 minutes to return. After this time, it's impossible, simply I never can resume "Lazzaro". :ò( Only thing to do is to pop battery and restart. I can find nothing to resolve and it's very annoying for me. |

Has anyone actually tested throughput to micro-SD on either an EE or PE to determine what "Class" of chip we can exploit?
Generally, the "Class" is equivalent to the MBps the chip will support, but who knows how fast an eDGe can WRITE? |

I haven't tried a single USB keyboard that DIDN'T work with my PE. I like the GearHead compact wireless keyboard. It uses a "dongle". I even plug in a barcode reader to USB.
