Touch Aware System being put into use already!

This in from Engadget, it appears that a Japanese game maker has already taken up M$'s Surface technology and is about to release a new game that's aware of cards placed on its surface; i.e., magic, Yugio, Pokemon, et.al. Guess I missed the games presentation this past weekend, otherwise I would've seen it first-person.

With a barcode of some sort on the back or RFID in the card, that could get very interesting.

Looks like they had their dates wrong, the Tokyo Game Show is this weekend. Looks like I'll be getting a chance to go after all!

It's kind of interesting reading some of the juvenile remarks on Engadget regarding this technology, they seem to think it's just a system that scans the card's barcode ala current systems, but it's actually quite more with human interaction via manipulating features on the screen with touch and gestures. Sure, it's only a game but it's the future in human-computer interaction.

How is it going to read the barcode? Does the touch interface have an optical component?

This is very interesting... I can think of a lot of game design ideas around this.
