Borders.com - on backorder? Sold out?
I ordered a kobo touch Saturday morning via the borders.com website. All the advertising said "Delivered by father's day" (it still does). I'm in New Zealand so I'm not expecting to receive it by then of course, but shortly afterwards I hope.
My confirmation email says "usually ships within 24 hours", however, my order status is now "On backorder" (I ordered Lilac - only the blue one was unavailable). I was wondering what this means? Has anyone else ordered online and if so, what is the status of your order? I am hoping that it just means they are away for the weekend so will ship it on Monday....but it looks ominously like a possible "sell out". |

Lilac ordered Saturday night and on 'backorder'. I assumed it is because (according to other threads) the Touch does not release in the USA until this Friday the 17th.

In Canada, the Chapters/Indigo website said "sold out online, more coming soon" on Saturday (it was released on Friday) ... but by today, Sunday, there were more supplies. I noticed some colours (black) in short supply in the stores (using the online "how much stock?" tool).
I think they are just being a little over cautious and supplies will be solid. There were a lot of learnings from the roll-out last year. Plus, pre-orders in Canada arrived on June 10th by courier, the same day they were made available for sale in stores -- folks who pre-ordered weren't penalized with slow delivery. |

I know in Chapters that what is meant by that sign is that they have none in stock but are getting them in as quickly as they can be delivered. Orders and Pre orders are also being done and shipped and in fact is probably the fastest way to get one since you are guaranteed a device then (there is no way you are getting one put on hold in the next little while for you). Also if you do have a preorder in canada and haven't gotten it yet if you ask and they have one they will give it to you out of their stock and keep your preorder when it arrives or at least they have been doing that for people.

Did I mention that I'm not patient when it comes to getting my new gadgets ;-) |

The backorder status is especially irritating because they advertise being able to get it before Father's Day. Best Buy has them on their website as 'coming soon' now, so I might cancel my Borders order and wait to actually try one out before buying and then take advantage of the easy Best Buy returns if necessary. The bankruptcy of Borders also makes me a little leery about buying from them, especially given their awful status updates--first they had the Kobo as not available until July 30, then 'ships within 24 hours' with priority shipping, then backordered with an 'available June 10' message. Then, too, with all the ghosting issues popping up for the touch readers, my current ipad/ipod touch/real library books combination is looking much better.

I don't know how the Borders website works but the issues is that the initial launch of the KT ereaders far excedded the supply we had in-stores causing us to sell out atleast on store level in around 48 hours.
Kobo is rushing out new stock to meet the demand hopefully coming next week but we've been suggesting that pre-orders are filled first so that to ensure getting an ereader to have people pre-order. I can see other retailers selling out if they get stock as well especially if a new shipment has arrived by the time they get stock, so I would try and grab one early in the day if it's something you've set your mind on getting. kiwipippa, if you have pre-ordered your Kobo eReader Touch Edition via Borders.com you will have to contact them directly to confirm shipping date, as they will be allocating their stock. That said you mentioned that you are located in NZ to where Borders.com is not yet shipping their orders, and if you have used a third party shipping you will have to again contact them to confirm shipping time.

Koboanna, borders do ship direct to New Zealand, and for once, at a reasonable shipping rate. I didn't preorder, I used "Buy now" as I ordered on Saturday. But now on the website the "buy now" has been replaced with "pre order" again, leading me to believe they have sold out or have preallocated all existing stock. My status has been updated to "Ship between June 11 and June 24". I'll just have to wait....
Edited - just received an email from borders apologising and saying stock will be shipped as soon as available. But no date. Last edited by kiwipippa; 06-13-2011 at 12:04 PM. |

I bit the bullet and ordered a silver KT either late Saturday or early Sunday (I'm a night owl). At the time, it had an Add to Cart button and said Usually ships in 24 hours. Checking a few hrs after my order went through, I saw my order history displaying it as backordered. When I saw your thread later on Sunday, Pippa, I checked the listing for all the KT Colors. They now said Available for preorder June 10!, which gave me the lulz. Now, mine's still on backorder but their listings now display a 24 hours notice again, and I remain a tad perplexed.
