Unhappy Gibberish

I'm having some problems with my Kobo. I had a friend put a whole load of box into a Dropbox file. Downloaded everything fine, created a folder, alphabetized it all but when I downloaded a book to test everything came up as so much gibberish. This is not a font size problem, most of the text doesn't make any sense. Now I know Umberto Eco is a difficult author, but this is crazy Anyone know of a fix? Like I said the text is legible but all of the letters just seem to be scrambled on the page.

a couple of questions what file format are they in (epub, pdf, txt) and can you open them on your computer as clear text through say calibre or another program. If you can't then the likely problem is with the actual files being corrupted rather than with the kobo in any way.
