Looking for a 9'' + e-reader
Hello everyone!
I am looking for a eBook reader with slightly higher dimensions over 9 inches. My requirements are simple - Support for pdf , chm , epub. - Support for bookmarks (i.e jump to chapter/page from index); - Ability to search ( not crucial) - Easy to get my books on to the reader. - Easy zoom function I do not need 3G; Wifi or any of that , all i need is a eBook reader which does the basics nicely. There are a few readers i have considered. - Kindle DX = No support for pdf , well its quite a joke to be honest. - Boox M90 - Looks great , but the support seems to be off , there is some one selling drugs on the forum and the moderators do not seem to care, there is lack of reviews as well. - Asus DR900/950 - These seem to have disappeared into thin air. - PocketBook Pro - I am not sure if this fits the requirements i mentioned. For obvious reasons no I-pad , i am looking to give my eyes a break. Also I am based in UK, not sure if that helps the discussion in any manner. Cheers! |

I do not know about the other readers, but for the Pocketbook the 902 or 903 would definitely fit your requirements. Bear in mind, though, that unlike the )nyx and the Knidle, the Pocketbook does not have a Pearl screen - I can read on it quite comfortably, thouhg.
As for free hand note taking, this feature is currently implemented for files other than PDF. One great thing of the Pocketbook is that you can customise it in many different ways - I am still in love with my own device! There is a full discussion of the comparison between Onyx and PB902 in this thread - you may wnat to start from the video comparison directly, from message 226. The short of it is that PB seems to dominate hands down on speed, but some have queried whether there were issues with the specific Onyx device used, and others have said these are things that can be sorted out by firmware. If I were you, I would first of all wait and see until the device you are penciling down does all the things you want it to do in the way you want them. |

I have similar requirements for an eReader. I need it mostly for programming books (generally PDF and sometimes CHM). I decided to buy a used Kindle DX 3G (White). Kindle DX has support for PDF files, but no zoom or bookmarks. Zoom is no big deal as I can crop PDF files in Mac OS X Preview (takes a couple of minutes). I made my decision after I learned that it is possible to install Duokan OS (dualboot) onto Kindle to get support for CHM, ePUB and broader PDF functions (zoom and bookmarks). I can not tell you about my experience yet, as I am still waiting for it to arrive from US.

Thanks paola! I have seen that video and the speed of M90 is poor. There are way too many issues with the IR sensor. All and all it feels like it was pushed out before time. Is there any significant differences between the 902 & 903. How 'bad' is the lack of pearl ink? |

On the Pearl screen I cannot say, as I have never used a Pearl device for any reasonable lenght of time. I am sure the Pearl is a better screen, but I am very fine with my Pocketbook screen. Ideally, if you could spend some time with both screens, you would know whether the difference is a deal breaker for you. |

Duokan supports directory of contents, this way i was able to browse through chapters of my text book. But i didn't test if it follows links inside of PDF.

I am sorry , this is news to me , does that mean you can use the index to jump to a location in the book ? Is the same applicable for chm's? Any ease of zoom ?

I haven't tested any chm yet so i can't say anything for it. The zoom is very easy with Duokan. You can choose the level with 10 percent increase and decrease. Also there is an option which i really like that lets you choose the margins of the page. This way you can cut the margins and zoom to the content. This info is saved for each pdf so you don't have to do that each time you open the book. There is also a smart layout option which is PDF reflow. I haven't used it much as my PDFs sometimes contain non-Latin characters and this mode doesn't support them. I was a kindle 3 user and upgraded to kindle DX just for being able to read PDFs better. With kindle 3 firmware on kindle DX and duokan, i am very satisfied with the results |

reprep - How did you get K3 firmware on a DX? Over at the Amazon discussion boards we DXG owners were told repeatedly that the DXG hardware was incapable of running the K3 firmware, so we should just shut up about wanting better PDF support.

In a complete turn from Boox to PocketBook , I have ordered a DXG.
Thanks for all your replies! I thought doukan was independent of the K3 firmware... Cheers! |
