Temporary E-reader Landscape view method

Hi, I have learned a lot from this forum to make use of my EE. I found a way to use e-reader in a landscape mode.
First , split the every page into two pages . This step can be done by using “Briss suggested by fgruber, or “A-PDF Page Cut suggested by AguaKate, or “PaperCrop(But I don’t know how to use this one, though).
Second, use "PDF-Xchange viewer " or other pdf programs to rotate the page. In that program , select Document-- Rotate Pages. In rotate pages popup to rotate the pages clockwise 90 degrees, and save the file. In this way , all pages in this file are landscape pages.
Third. export the file to the entourage edge , use e-reader to open it , and all the function works well with this pdf files, all highlights, annotates can be saved like other "normal" pdf files.
Besides, I am not sure if it's my illusion . I found that the hightlight function works better comparing to using it on other portrait pages. I can select exactly the words or lines I need in this landscape pages. And there is no need to zoom in or zoom out pdf in E-reader, save a large amout of time and become more efficient in reading pdf.

Very cool! I'm sure many members of the forum will be excited to try this out. I think this has to rank up there with one of the all-time best first posts.

Hi All,

for linux users, the rotation can be done w/

pdf90 --outfile Article-Landscape.pdf Article.pdf

There's (at least) a Debian package that provides pdf90.

Etienne

That's a neat idea. I have been using a freeware to merge and split pdfs. Its specs include rotating pages of selected documents but I haven't tried out the rotate function yet.

It is PDFsam and here's the link:

http://www.pdfsam.org/?page_id=42

The basic version which has the aforementioned features is freeware and there is no expiry.

This is really interesting; thanks for posting. It just seems like a lot of work up front. I purchased the EE to streamline my work and to make me more productive. So, I'm really looking forward to correction of the eInk software.

Cool feature, I often use PDF documents made from Powerpoint. In that case there is no need to first split the pages, you can rotate with 'PDF-Xchange viewer' and the document fits the broader screen!

Hi, I just tried it, but Firefox quarantined it as a known malware issue. Any one else have this issue?

Hello you all. Thinking about this thread I was looking for a possibility to rotate PDF documents on the Entourage Edge instead of on the desktop. I found on antother website a reference to Repligo reader, which should have the possibility to rotate PDF documents on an android device.Has anyone have had experience with this program?

Hi GertJan

I tested the reader on my Pocket eDGe. The version I used did not show a rotate possibility (maybe the wrong version).
The reader itself was ok. Personaly I prefer the reader from DocumentsToGo which is included on the eDGe.

Rotating a document on the LCD side is not the problem, you can do this by means of the rotating switch on the device. This can be done independent of the used reader app.
( Rotating of PDF documents on the EInkt side is currently not possible which is a problem.)

Too bad, would be nice to rotate on the edge itself.

The developer addressed that problem in an 3 Oct 2010 post (www.pdfsam.org); here it is:
------------------------------
Hi everybody,
as some of you may already know by the forum, a couple of days ago McAfee antivirus reported an infection in the pdfsam-starter.exe. I’m sure it’s a false positive and I already reported it to McAfee attaching the sources of the pdfsam-starter hoping that they will fix this issue as soon as possible. In the meantime I released a patch containing a new pdfsam-starter.exe which fixes an issue on Windows 7 64bits (bug #3050730) and that McAfee likes more than the previous one. The patch can be found here, I also included the sources so anybody can check them or even compile the starter. I really hope to have a fast feedback from McAfee and I was also thinking about dropping the pdfsam-starter executable (that is the only Windows executable included in the package) in next releases, leaving there only the .bat script to avoid any further trouble with the wonderful world of Windows/Virus/AntiVirus.

Andrea
--------------------------------
I also used the firefox when I downloaded it but never got the notice about a malware. AVG also did not detect any problem with the file.

-----------------------------------
Here are two work-arounds the developer gave on this issue:

1) by the way you don't need to use the executable but you can double click the jar file in the pdfsam directory (the exe file is there just for the windows start menu).
2) Anyway as simple workaround download the zip package, unzip it whereever you want, delete the pdfsam-starter.exe (since your AV will find it infected), start pdfsam running the run.bat in the "bin" subdirectory.

Thanks for the feedback. I will retry again. I'm finding not all pdf's are created equal and it causes some frustration. But to be able to use briss and then rotate them for a verticle screen to be very helpful.

Micheal

Hi,

I don't know if it helps but I use "the pdf toolkit" to rotate a pdf. It is free, fast and don't need to do anything then typing a command line ... (it is windows, mac & linux compatible)

http://www.pdflabs.com/docs/install-pdftk/

It is portable and need a command line as follows :

pdftk inputname.pdf cat 1-endW output outputname.pdf

Sincerely Yours,

Lobo
