Using the eDGe in the classroom
We have had several threads on how different people are using the eDGe. Excellent information has come out regarding use for personal, in class, business and research use. We have not had a discussion on how the eDGe is used as part of learning management by educators. I would like to pose the same question to educators who are or intend to use the eDGe. in their classrooms. HGow are you using it and do you have any suggestions for others.

I use the EE for my discussion notes every day in class. I have also tried the usb-vga connection using the projector. That worked very well with the e-ink side. I had trouble with writing on the lcd side while projecting. Also, because the wireless usb-vga doesn't currently work I had to stand in an odd place in the classroom to do this. Once the wireless usb-vga works, I think I will use the EE more in this way.
Students were really excited by the idea that I could post what I had "written on the board" using the EE. Others didn't like only being able to see one page at a time versus the wall of notes physically written on the board, but I was able to quickly flip back through pages of notes from that day when someone asked. I think there is a lot of unexplored potential here. For me, the wireless is a necessity before I can really move forward with using it more in the classroom. |

I have heard similar comments about the students enthusiasm in rece8iving the instructors notes.
How did you deal with the rotation issue on the e-ink side? When pages on a text are displayed in Landscape mode, they appear to rotate below the image so the bottom third of the text is not visible. This has a negative affect for those educators who like to show their students how they have marked up the text for review. On a more personal note, what are your thoughts on allowing your students to use the built in tape recorder? We have one school which has 2 classes using the eDGe completely and students tape the lectures and attach them to the section in the text as a review object. Several students have commented that it is helpful if they can't remember how their instructor explained the topic. My question relates to whether this will become common and have possible IP issues? |

Not being able to see the bottom third on the e-ink side is a bit annoying. For writing notes in class I just used the top two-thirds. I could see on the projection when I was running out of room. Using text I've marked up, I actually did the export to pdf and opened it on the tablet side. This way the students could see the colors, instead of just gray scale and there were no issues with not being able to see part of the document.
I don't mind the tape recorder. I often record myself so I can improve my explanations of certain topics. I also record class discussions so I can remember comments or items that students bring up without trying to take notes as we talk. I also record student presentations so they can hear themselves and improve their presentation skills. (I'm looking forward to using the video camera for this in the spring.) I always let the students know if I am recording. As for myself, I learned quickly to assume everything I say and do in class is public record. That's not to say that I don't have academic freedom, but I am very conscious of making all sides of a controversy known, when something is my opinion, making it clear that I'm making a joke, etc. I'm also untenured, so I often have people observing my classes. I'm sure there are others that will disagree but I don't think you have any reasonable expectation of privacy as a teacher in a classroom. |
