A great tool for slicing PDFs
As of yesterday, I am the proud owner of a new EE! I started a Ph.D. program this past fall and have been scouring the web for the perfect academic eReader. It astonishes me that other device makers have utterly failed to make an eInk device that satisfies even basic PDF annotation needs. I tried the Kindle but was utterly disappointed when I realized the highlights and notes cannot be saved to the PDF or viewed anywhere but on the Kindle.
Even if the EE isn't as sleek and light as some devices, it exceeds my greatest expectations for academic work. Thanks to some good posts on the forum I was able to take it to class today and make great use of it. I thought I could contribute one thing to the forum for those of you who are looking to cut down two-page scans or multi-column PDFs for better viewing. A-PDF Page Cut is a light and user-friendly tool for slicing and dicing PDFs into more manageable portions. I use it on my computer and then drop the PDF into my Dropbox to be opened on the EE with the Dropbox app. It works like a charm. The trial version is free and will put a modest watermark on the first page of your document. It's incredibly useful and intuitive. http://www.a-pdf.com/page-cut/?product-pc Thanks to the forum regulars who made me feel confident taking the plunge with the EE. I'm sure I won't look back. |

Thanks for sharing
I posted info about a free program that does something similar: http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/...ighlight=Briss Last edited by fgruber; 02-04-2011 at 11:41 AM. |

Thanks! I downloaded that one too. It looks great too. I like the precision of it, although it might take a bit more time to use than A-PDF Page Cut, which has an idiot-proof UI.
![]() Update: I've had some time to work with Briss, and here is my comparison of the two programs. Briss groups pages with similar layout and you have to apply cuts manually to each set of pages. Seems like a great choice for more complicated documents, but takes a lot more time if you're just looking to apply cuts to separate two pages or two columns across many pages. A-PDF is much faster if you are looking to apply a uniform cut across the document. It has a lot more features for advanced cuts (batch processing), but since I'm using it to cut documents uniformly, I haven't had to try them out. Two good programs with different advantages for different types of cuts! Last edited by AguaKate; 02-10-2011 at 11:54 AM. |
