Moving books to daily shelf and home screen

Having a problem getting some books from "my files" to the daily shelf so I can drag them onto my home screen.
The instruction manual says to go to the setting button in the quick nav bar and then go to the "Home Settings Screen".
Problem is there is no home settings screen only a home screen that appears down in the apps settings. And that only deals with wallpaper and clearing your reading list.

How do I simply put books from "My Files/Documents" to my home screen so all I have to do is tap the home screen to access my particular book?

If you're running the newest OS version (1.2) then putting them in My Files/Books will have them integrate with your B&N content in the Library from there you can Add to Home (just tap and hold and Add to Home). Actually with 1.2 you can just tap and hold on the book right in the My Files/Books folder too and get the same option to Add to Home (AFAIK you can do that from any folder [I know I can do it from the books in my ezPDF folder and well as My Files/Books]).

How can I find out which OS version I'm running?
I'f I'm not running the 1.2 version how do I install i?.
I don't want to mess up any settings in the Nook.
