NASA rover "Spirit" - RIP
Scientists say goodbye to Spirit rover.
".... engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge near downtown Los Angeles sent their final commands to Spirit early Wednesday morning, more than a year after the rover made its last transmission to Earth." Instead of being sad I'd like to suggest going to the NASA Mars 3D Images site and downloading some 3D views of Mars made by the rovers. And, yes, you will need a pair of those 3D glasses. For those with two, or three, monitors you can use a free program (*), DisplayFusion, to stretch it across your monitors for a fantastic "view out the window". Then just hide icons on desktop. * - They do have a more feature packed "Pro" version, but the free one is more than good enough. |

I agree 100%, there is no reason to be sad, in fact we should all be pretty impressed. Firstly that Spirit lasted so much longer than it was expected to, second, and even more impressive ... it is on Mars!!!! I think it is absolutely incredible that we can send something all the way to another planet and have it function for months sending us pictures and other data!
Mars for crying out loud!!!! That's awesome!!! On the other hand, if you want to feel sad about it there is always this .... http://xkcd.com/695/ |

And Curiosity will be launched the end of this year to arrive next summer. It is several times the size of Spirit and Opportunity with wheels that are nearly two feet in diameter.
