Why would you use OCR for a 2007 book?

I'm reading a new release ebook Copyright 2007 and I've noticed a couple of OCR errors in it. Nothing major just enough to realize that it was an OCR conversion. This is the typical stuff such as the occasional page number between paragraphs or garbage characters in a place name.

Does anyone know why they would decide to do an OCR conversion rather then going directly to the digital source? Surely they have computers.....

Barcey, this was recently discussed (and is ongoing?) here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15889

I was thinking about listing here some titles and publishers of content that I've purchased from Sony Connect that have errors like you describe. Something of a wall of shame. Sending emails directly to Sony and the publishers have so far not appeared to help matters.

Thanks for the link. I see it's because they're dysfunctional. I was afraid it might be some poorly engineered excuse for justifying the pricing model.

"Well we had to first print the book in hard cover and then ship it the company that did the OCR for it so of course you should have to pay for the printing and shipping costs. It actually costs us more to produce an electronic edition." :-)

i'd be happy to host that on my site, if they don't want it here on mobileread.

This sounds like an excellent idea... the Wiki would also be a good place for listening the titles.
