Using folder structure to generate tags?

New calibre user about to input a large library of PDFs. My PDFs are arranged in a folder structure organized by topic. The best place to store this information in calibre would be in the tags. I don't see any way to access the file path on import. I'm guessing one way to do it would be to import one folder at a time and set the "Tags to apply when adding a book" appropriately for each folder in the Preferences→Adding books dialog. While this won't be too difficult, does anyone know of another way to do this programmatically?

Regards,

If the folder info belongs in a tag then your method is the best solution.

Another widely used solution is to modify the filename of books before importing to get the metadata into the filename, then use regex to get it into the metadata field of interest. If it needs to go into tags, it can't go in directly. Instead, put it in series or publisher, then do a search and replace to move it into tags. There are several ebook renaming programs that will move folder names into the filename.
