Calibre won't start after 7.5.5 update
I updated to Calibre 7.5.5 yesterday. I didn't reboot my system right away. Today I can't open Calibre at all. It starts shows the splashscreen and then nothing.
In my task manager calibre.exe *32 starts along with 5 calibre-parallel.exe *32. I'm running Windows 7. |

Calibre 0.7.55 Will not Start
I hope this is correct to put my question in here as I've a similar problem of Calibre simply not starting. I had downloaded and installed 0.7.54 2 days ago, installed and it ran fine. Last night, Calibre prompted me that 0.7.55 was out and so I downloaded and installed. I installed over the program instead of removing 0.7.54 first, but I found nothing suggesting against this. Upon have installed 0.7.55 I launched it and it started fine. I then began to migrate files to the new 0.7.55 from another drive to Calibre from and old Calibre C:\Windows\User\Calibre\Library on an hard drive that was smaller then the new drive where the new install of 0.7.55 is. It transferred only 2 books, then crashed. Now it simple will not start, it immediately crashes. He is a listing according to to what I've done as per the Calibre frequently asked questions.
1. The program is not as far as I know being used by another program. But I did: A. Uninstalled Calibre B. Rebooted my computer C. I re-installed, and did not start from the installation wizard. D. I temporarily disabled my antivirus, and disconnected from the internet E. There is no file named metadata.db. I looked in all files and found nothing. F. I started Calibre G. It again now immediately crashes with Windows calibre.exe has stopped working. Checking for solution, with no answer. 2. No error about Python function. 3. I've left the library where it is C:\Users\Lesley\Calibre Library. No non english characters. The program also ran fine the first time but now subsequently is when it crashes. 4. I've assigned it to run as administrator 5. I'm running Windows 7 64bit 6. I've attempted both disabling my antivirus and its firewall off. I don't see how to turn off Norton 360. 7. I have started the cmd.exe and run a calibre-debug -g and it just immediately just crashes and shows the same Windows Program failed box that shows when I start Calibre from the shortcut or in the programs directory. I will do what it takes to use this. Very nice program and I used it before, and it did all the same things. I just thought perhaps it was due to problems I was having with an old hard drive. But this installation is on a brand new hard drive and a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit. Thanks for any help and again I look forward to any help |

I doubt this has anything to do with 0.7.55, but feel free to go back to 0.7.54 instead, see if that still works. Older versions of calibre are available from

Weird still running into it simply not wanting to start. Though I did some searching around and did find a folder with a hole lot of crash dump .dmp files all relating to calibre.
calibre.exe.832 " 1780 " 1880 " 2112 " 2376 " 3192 " 3324 " 4972 calibre-debug.exe.1524 " 3292 I've been trying to figure out how to open these and past information on forums. I've downloaded the Windows SDK but I'm a novice at such things and though I've got the dmp reader I think working, it won't read the files. Anything else I can do to help address this. Oh yes one other thing, after I removed 0.7.55 and backed up once and went into appdata I found a calibre file in I think it was local data. I deleted it and upon reinstalling calibre it at least finished installing and went into allowing me to do the settings menu, but then after setting a few things and clicking next, it locked up again. Thank you again. |

I'm afraid I'm not a windows developer, so I have no clue what to do with windows dump files.

Oh darn. Guess I've seen no where anyone describing any such problem as this. Just not sure what it is. Its done it on Windows 7 64bit twice, now even on a brand new install. I install it, it works once then doesn't work ever again. Well thank you very much for the help, I will continue to read if anyone else posts such a problem. I will just find another cataloger in the meantime.
Thank you. |

I'm having a similar problem after updating to Calibre 0.7.56 on my win7 64 bit system: there are weird error messages like:
calibre, version 0.7.56 ERROR: Unhandled exception: <b>AttributeError</b>:'list' object has no attribute 'add_book' Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\__init__.py", line 278, in dispatch File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 1249, in books_uploaded File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 393, in add_books_to_metadata File "site-packages\calibre\devices\usbms\driver.py", line 307, in add_books_to_metadata AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'add_book' calibre, version 0.7.56 ERROR: Unhandled exception: <b>AttributeError</b>:'QWidget' object has no attribute 'filler' Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\layout.py", line 321, in resizeEvent AttributeError: 'QWidget' object has no attribute 'filler' After that calibre crashes and is killed by windows. Repair the install or un- and reinstall didn't help (C:\Program Files\Calibre2 had been deleted). Deleting the calibre folder in my user directory or using a new library didn't help too. I solved the problem by uninstalling calibre 0.7.56 and going back to 0.7.55 after deleting the calibre registry entries (that was just a try... don't know if it's a good idea). Maybe I will try updating to the next version as 0.7.56 still crashes after updating. |

The registry entries are irrelevant- Calibre, due to its multi-OS scope, doesn't save anything in the registry, but rather in its configuration directory. You could try deleting that (save a copy first, if you want to)- you can find it via preferences->advanced->miscellaneous->open calibre config directory
Also, I've noticed that this is all on Win7, 64 bit, so you could try using some sort of 32bit mode, if there is such a thing available. |

I just discovered, that the problem might be related to my connected kindle. At the moment I reinstalled calibre 0.7.56 with a fresh cofig directory. After rebooting my system it worked as expected. After closing calibre connecting my kindle and restarting it, it crashes with the "AttributeError: 'QWidget' object has no attribute 'filler'" error message. Disconnecting the kindle and restarting calibre gives the same error message, but windows doesn't terminate the process. I can use calibre normally, just that resizing the user interface has no effect (well, the window resizes, but not the content). Connecting the kindle while calibre is already running causes a crash too. I'll try if changing some windows compatiliby settings might help. But I'm not too optimistic, as calibre used to run very well on my system for a long time. However, I'll report when I find out something new. |

You haven't run calibre from source code at some point have you, and got an old version still being pointed to by the environment variable?

Hi dropping in to ask another question if I may. I looked and didn't find this. I was able to finally get calibre running. I deleted everything I could find even some hidden stuff. I've got the newest version up, but I"m running into another interesting problem. It will run, but after a random amount of books being entered into the database it does the same crash and never will run again. Doesn't matter compatability or run as administrator. But I found in a test if I delete the metadata file in the library it will work again. What is this? I'm sure its some setting I've done or honestly I don't know what. I've read through the forums, I've went through the FAQ's and manual, nothing. Any suggestions?
