Hello all. I've noticed something in my behaviour and I just wanted to see if there's anyone here with the same attitude. I love my reader, it follows me wherever I go and we even sleep together. You get the picture. But sometimes... it's like I'm a little bit ashamed to be seen with it. Crowded places like the university or public transport make me want to hide it and try to use it inconspicuously, which is hard, since it's metallic red. People in Croatia don't really use readers and just having one attracts looks. Some people recognize it for what it is, some have never heard of such a thing. I feel like I'm trying to be a show off for using it in public, which I know is stupid, since I would be reading a book there without any problems... but still. Anybody having the same "problem" or it's just me? |

Not me! I'll try to flash the reader around as much as I can, in the hope that somebody actually notices it. Nobody ever does... (I want to make converts!) I've never even seen another e-reader in the wild, beside my own and my husbands and those two or three they have floating around where I work (as they work with books a lot, it makes sense...) |

Now get to work with some glue and a sharp knife and carve out place for your reader in a book. If you place your device in, from most angles you will look like you are reading an ordinary book. | |

From what? From whom? My blackberry is my chosen reader and to hide the reader is a bad idea. My boss would scream bloody murder if if I hid my berry and wasn't on it for a while.

I do the same thing, for two reasons really, one I don't want it stolen and where I live it would be seen as a good item to steal and sell on and two, when I once took it into work to read all I got were comments about "oh, it's not like reading a proper book", "it's not good for your eyes" and "isn't that a bit posh". I now just take in my phone and read books on that.

Hide it? Never. I read it wherever I have a chance. Normally, when in public, that will be in airports and on aeroplanes. I'm a seaman and travels alot. However, I seldom see other readers, but there are "thirteen on the dozen" of ipads and the like around in the airlounges and transit halls. So far, since I bought my reader last September, I haven't had any comment on it, albeit a few looks though. |

No I read it out in public. I've read it is restaurants, waiting rooms, in the car & waiting at bus stops. It is in it's small pink cover & I place it in my purse when I'm done reading. I have only seen one other reader out in public & one was a Nook at B&N.

Not here in the SF Bay Area-when I ride the train it is always full of people using Kindles and iPads.

I purposely didn't take the PDA that I used to have on my last trip to Hunan, China. That p-book was the only one I've read in a long, long while.

I use mine all the time when out & about - the only time I'd bother to hide it is if leaving it in the car, I think. I wouldn't dream of bothering to hide it - to be able to use it wherever you want (within reason, naturally - the mind boggles) is surely the whole point ? I don't much care if I'm seen reading it, I simply treat it as I would behave with a book. |

I think the purpose of me getting one was so the other half wouldn't have to carry bags full of heavy books to and from the library I do get your point but at least in my life that's not how it works. For example I take pbooks camping all the time but wouldn't do that with my Kindle, so don't have an issue with not using my e-reader everywhere, when I don't have my Kindle out I have the Kindle app on my phone, so I still have an e-reader, just a more inconspicuous one. I'm sure the situation will change in the next few years as e-readers become more common I will become more comfortable, but at the moment I live somewhere that still thinks the internet and especially broadband is some strange new fangeled thing. I hide mine sometimes, but that's because I am reading at work or in class when I shouldn't really be.

i usually have it with me at work to read during my lunch break but for the most part i only read it at home or if i'm travelling. when i had it on the train i didn't see any others and i also hung out at a chapters for a couple hours reading my kobo and walking around every now and then, again i was the only one with the device. i do feel weird with it sometimes, especially inside a chapters but other people that are there read books right off the shelves sitting in corners or against a window sill, books they haven't paid for yet are allowed to read in the store. at least i purchased my kobo and the books on it. i don't get strange looks though and i think if i had to sit in a waiting room i'd probably use it, i work in an office where most people are tech savvy and have toys of their own. so to answer the original question, no i do not hide my kobo but then again it doesn't go everywhere with me all the time. and i don't see the reason to hide it, most people are on a phone texting or reading or laptop or ipad so it's more common now than say 5 years ago if you had one. |
