New guy

Hi everyone. I'm a brazillian book junkie (so I apoplogize upfront for any grammar or spelling mistakes I make, English is not my first language) and most of my reading is still in print but around five years ago I fell in love with ebooks. So far I've been reading them on my PC and laptop and it's been good enough but when faced with the choice of reading from the screen or from paper I'll go with the latter most of the time simply because paper books are far more portable than what I've been reading my ebooks on (really, I couldn't care less what books smell like).

Recently I find myself increasingly annoyed at the fact that foreign titles I'd like to read take months to get here if I order them abroad as paper books and as a result of that (and of having landed a job that pays me enough to start considering it) have been thinking seriously about getting an ereader

I've been lurking over the forums for a while now and finally felt compelled to register because I'm finally getting an ebook reader, but turns out I have no idea which one I should get.

So I browsed over the "which one should i buy" secton for a while, got a few ideas but i'm looking for some more personal advice. So if you think I'm a nice guy or you'd just like to be one more person who gets tell me what to do with my money (much like my parents, boss, girlfriend, dog and girlfriend's dog) why don't you show up on the brand new thread I've created just to have people tell how to spend my money?

Thank you both, GeoffC and cassidym. And thank you one more time, GeoffC, for the link to the ereader matrix.

Good to have your company, Thufirhaw. Might be an idea to take a while to study the independent reviews of the various available devices in the 'which one should I buy?' sub forum here. I believe ebook reading is exploding in Brazil, so there must be many Portuguese language ebooks around. Luck and best wishes. Neil

I wouldn't say exploding, some large book retailers are now selling both devices and ebooks, though not much of either, as they're both quite expensive around here. Also I read mostly genre stuff, SF and horror particularly, of which there are hardly any brazillian authors nowadays (and translations of foreign works have become quite rare too), so I'm not aware of that many ebooks in portuguese. Anyway I do believe the market for devices is eventually going to grow even more, specially for multipurpose ones, like tablets. Readers should grow too, but not as much.

Maybe I was being a little over-enthusiastic then, Thufirhaw (certainly there seems to be a growing number of Spanish books out there for the rest of Latin America). No doubt things will improve soon in Brazil. Meanwhile, of course, there's no shortage of SF and horror if you're as comfortable reading in English as you seem to be writing in the language. Best wishes. Neil
