is running a Sophie Server a good business?

hi

here is the thing

Sophie has a server side component where users can download books from or upload their creations to.
It also handles comment and annotation sharing, stuff like that.

The server - just as the reader application - is open source, so one can run his own server.
I figure you can start with a Linux based Virtual Private Server - that cost about 30$ per month for hosting. (Of course if you grow it out you can always upgrade, that would be a sweet trouble to have...)

The question is, would it make business sense to start my own server? Is there sufficient interest in self-publishing and shared annotations?

What do you think?

As they say, there's only one way to find out -- do it.

It may very well work depending on the performance of the server and the applications, the content offered, and the marketing of the site.

This Sophie, what does it do? It looks like Desktop Publishing for ebooks. What format(s) does it output to?

Sophie is actually a tool to create and publish multimedia books.
from the site

Sophie's raison d'être is to enable people to create robust, elegant rich-media, networked documents without recourse to programming. We have word processors, video, audio and photo editors but no viable options for assembling the parts into a complex whole except tools like Flash which are expensive, hard to use, and often create documents with closed proprietary file formats. Sophie promises to open up the world of multimedia authoring to a wide range of creative people.

it is both a creation tool and a viewer. the two functionalities are currently bundled into a single application but they have plans to separate them into two distinct applications in the future.
So you can download just the Sophie viewer (or whatever they're going to call it) if you only want to read books but not edit or create them.
