Heaven's Fire by Patricia Ryan just 99c for a limited time!

My popular medieval romantic suspense, Heaven's fire, originally published by NAL, which is regularly $3.99, has just been put on sale for 99 cents!

DRM-free at Barnes & Noble. Also available from Amazon, Sony, Apple, Kobo, and Diesel.

“Lusty and exhilarating, this is medieval romance at its best. Heaven’s Fire is a splendid tale, and Patricia Ryan is a writer to watch.” New York Times Bestselling Author Patricia Gaffney

“With Heaven’s Fire, Patricia Ryan establishes herself as a major voice in the medieval romance genre. For originality, drama and passion, Heaven’s Fire can’t be beat.” Romantic Times

A synopsis from The Literary Times:

When Rainulf Fairfax first meets Constance of Cuxham, she is a raven haired beauty in the first stages of the pox. Rainulf is a teaching priest tormented by self-doubt and trying to leave the priesthood. He is drawn to the attractive, clever young woman... and is grief stricken when he finds out she died--and overwhelmed with relief when she arrives in Oxford calling herself Corliss and dressed as a man. He offers to help her--but for a man seeking the chancellorship of Oxford, it's in his best interests if everyone believes Corliss is male. Corliss is on the run from Sir Roger Foliot--an evil man who seeks to make her his mistress willingly or not....Sir Roger has sent someone after her-- a man named Pigot. Corliss has never seen him but she has seen his work-- mutilated women who are returned to Sir Roger so he may do what he wants with them. Corliss is determined not to let this happen to her. At Rainulf's insistence, she moves in with him and assumes a life as a young man and a very talented book illuminator. Rainulf has been celibate ever since he took his vows eleven years ago. Now an ex-priest, he is determined to maintain his celibacy in order to become Chancellor. But his attraction to Corliss grows as he gets to know her. Corliss is determined to never marry again, never to allow a man to have power over her. But Rainulf is different-- he respects her feelings and doesn't try to control her. He seems to care about her-- but it is foolish of her to have feelings for him when they can never be together. A marvelous medieval romance from an incredibly gifted author! A fascinating glimpse of the past as only Patricia Ryan can tell it! Suspenseful and passionate! Heaven's Fire will leave you breathless! Patricia Ryan creates memorable characters that will warm your heart, and sensual tension that will raise your temperature! Fans of medieval romance will not be disappointed with Patricia Ryan's newest book! Heaven's Fire is a page turner up until the nail biting end! Patricia, might not be the best thread for this, but I just thought I'd let you know that the .99 deal worked for me on your Nell Sweeny mysteries - I got the first one when you had it on sale, and have bought (and read) all six this past week.

Really enjoyed them, thanks so much!

I appreciate your letting me know! Authors throw around that term "book of my heart" pretty freely, and in a sense I guess every book is a book of your heart to some extent. But there's something very special to me about that series, and about Will and Nell. They became SO real to me, and I came to care so much about them. In fact, my publisher wanted me to stop after MURDER IN THE NORTH END and start a contemporary series, but I wouldn't do it. How could I leave my readers--and myself--hanging about what happens to those two?

Oh, and my favorite scene out of all 27 of my novels is the near the beginning of STILL LIFE WITH MURDER when Nell meets will in that jail cell.

I'm getting ready to publish a "boxed set" of those books. So glad you enjoyed them!

Hi, Anne,

I'm so glad you loved STILL LIFE! Thanks for letting me know.

Here's why I didn't put the 99 cent special on Smashwords (and know that I'm open to changing my mind if get a good argument). When you change a price on Smashwords, the third party outlets they distribute to (Sony, Apple, Kobo, and Diesel) automatically change their prices, as well. But then, when you change it back, it takes some of those outlets forever to change their prices back. I returned STILL LIFE and SILKEN THREADS to their regular prices some time ago, but they're still 99 cents at Kobo, which means they're still 99 cents at Amazon, where the lion's share of my sales occur (because Amazon matches the lowest price). So I'm taking a real hit on royalties.

That's why some of us are experimenting with not lowering our price at Smashwords for these temporary sales. I must tell you, although my books sell really well on Amazon, the sales from Smashwords are negligible; it's the same with most authors in my position.

That said, I'm all about pleasing my readership. I figure if I want them to buy my books, I shouldn't make them jump through hoops to do it. Do you think I should lower the price on Smashwords?

Pat

Ooh! Forgot to mention. Backlist eBooks is cooking up a BIG SALE (the BeB Merry May Smashwords Sale) to take place the week of May 16. Most of our Smashwords authors will be offering discount codes, some pretty deep. Mark Coker is planning to post the list of books and codes on his blog, but you'll also be able to get them at http://backlistebooks.com.

Our BeB authors have all been published by major print publishers, and they include NYT and USA Today bestsellers and award-winners, so this will be a terrific opportunity to stock up on high-quality, editorially vetted fiction at absolutely ridiculous prices.

Hi Pat -- Good to see you here. What I did last time re lowering a price temporarily at SW was to just go ahead and lower it, but not resubmit the book to the other outlets. I think the price change only carries over if you resubmit.

BTW, for the benefit of others here, Pat is not only a writer, she's a terrific cover designer. She did the covers for my Chaos Chronicles and, just last week, for my new Dragon Space omnibus that's on a thread floating somewhere near this one.

P.S. And I'll be taking part in that Backlist eBooks special Pat mentioned, also.

Jeff, hi! How nice of you to stop by! Thanks for the shout-out about my covers.

I actually wrote to Mark Coker to ask about whether you can withhold the price change from the 3rd party outlets by not resubmitting. He told me that when you change the price on SW, it automatically "populates out" to the other outlets the next time books are "shipped" to them, which is once a week on Thursday or Friday. Is your experience different? Actually, maybe you could just email me the answer so we don't keep talking shop (I started, I know) and bore all these nice people to death.

I'm glad you're in on the big sale. I think it's going to be a win-win for us and the readers both.

Pat

Well obviously I'd like you to Pat, but I see your dilemma. The full price is hardly exorbitant, but it's a bit annoying if it's unavailable to me at the cheaper price. I'll have to let you decide and I guess the bottom line for you is to get a decent return for your writing. Keep up the good work.
