Not a Nook

in my opinion the Nook is being sold without full disclosure of it's limitations. Nooks can not purchase books from Barnes and Noble while outside of the U.S. What a rip-off.

This information is provided on Barnes & Noble's website and took me less than 30 seconds to find. Go to the Nook webpage, click Support, click Travel:

Quote:
Can I use my NOOK while traveling abroad?

Yes, when you travel abroad, you can read any files that are already on your NOOK. You can connect to Wi-Fi® hotspots and download eBooks and subscriptions already in your online digital library. You cannot, however, purchase additional eBooks and subscriptions while overseas.
I'm sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your purchase, but B&N did not hide this information from you.

Given that the Nook is not sold outside of the US, I fail to see why anyone would be surprised that purchasing books outside the US is all that surprising. Nevermind that stickybuns found the relevant passage in about 30 seconds of hunting.

And even with that, you can buy books from Sony, Kobo, and any other EPub bookseller and move them to the Nook via the USB cord and read those. Heck, you can probably buy books from Barnes and Noble on your laptop and move them to your Nook via the USB cord outside of the US.

You know that you are seriously deluded when two Kindle users think that your statement is just, well, wrong.

Actually, Barnes & Noble goes out of its way to keep people from purchasing books from outside of the US. In addition to requiring a US-based credit card, they also look at the IP address of the computer. With Amazon, I only had to use an IP proxy if I found a book that I wanted to purchase. With Barnes & Noble, I had to have the proxy running before visiting their site.

BN might go out of its way to keep people from buying books outside the US but the strength of the Nook, so I am told, is that you can buy from any store that sells EPub. So even if you cannot buy a book from BN you can buy a book from many other sources and add it to the Nook using Calibre or USB cord.

And BN is pretty upfront that the Nook is meant for the US market and only the US market. They don't sell the device outside of the US and they have the necesary verbage on their website to let you know that you cannot buy books outside of the US.

I am not a Nook owner, I saw one on the plane the other day and was thrilled that I had my Kindle, but to blast BN for not disclosing that it is not meant to be used outside the US is just plain silly.

Personally, I would tell anyone buying an e-reader for international use to buy a Kindle or a Sony because they are both international readers. BN does not market the Nook as an international reader so why would people expect it to behave like the Kindle or Sony?

You can also always ask when you buy one. The information is provided on the website and you can always call the number provided and ask them about restrictions. No one hid anything from you. This is common knowledge.

If you do wish to purchase overseas, go to the Nook forum and read about methods others use. I personally have sold several nooks to people intending to follow these methods to read internationally, and am planning on setting up my friend to do the same.

This issue has nothing to do with B&N and the Nook, but is rather a generic limitation imposed by international agreements governing sales of copyrighted works outside the U.S. that applies across the board to all U.S. based book sellers, unless they have specifically arranged to purchase international sales rights.

If it is slightly easier to get around these limitations on the Kindle, this is simply because Amazon is doing a somewhat more sloppy job of monitoring their sales and enforcing the rules. (After all, why should Amazon go out of their way, when the only down side for them is that they get a few extra orders and can make a few more bucks?)

If you don't like these laws, then you are free to try to get them changed (good luck with that - there are lots of vested interests with money to spread around to keep things the way they are)

In the mean time, B&N is simply trying to comply with the law, and I don't think it's fair to criticize them for it.

On the positive side, as has already been pointed out, unlike the Kindle, both the classic eInk and the Color NOOK readers support the OPEN EPUB STANDARD, which is the most popular format outside the U.S., so this should give Non-U.S. users the best possible chance of finding a local bookseller in their own country who DOES have the legal right to sell them a particular title.

You don't need a US based credit card. Only a US IP, easily solvable via VPN. You even can use VPN on a softrooted nook, else you can buy the books on your PC and then download on nook without VPN.

K for that.

Also, the statements about purchasing via pc/notebook/netbook while travelling and then moving via USB are true. I have done this with B&N and numerous other stores. And yes, they all work on my Nook.

Yup a troll but I wouldn't want people to think that his post was in any way valid if they were to see it.

Nah, I wouldn't say that he was trolling. Trolls usually don't give up that easily. I suspect that he was hoping for some sort of instant validation ("OMG! That's terrible! And you, of course, bear no personal responsibility!") and is now licking his wounds.

Question for the Nook owners: is there any way to purchase ebooks while traveling abroad if one *doesn't* have a laptop? Can you make the transfer from a web cafe computer or library computer? Or download files from non-B&N ebooksellers via the Nook's web browser?

I can answer most of those without being a nook owner!

Using a library or other public computer would be totally up to the policy of the computer owner. In my US experience, many public computers do not allow strange USB devices or file transfers, but I've run into a few that do. Out of the US, perhaps they are more lax.
You cannot download files from other websites directly with the nook classic. This is one reason I prefer the Kindle.

chapter 2 - I spoke with Nook Tech Support and was advised that if I arranged to have someone sign on to my Nook account in the US and purchase a book that it would download to my Nook even though I am out of US. I followed their advice and the newly acquired book will not download to my Nook. I know my Nook is connecting to Barnes and Noble because I am able to download Samples.
