Why activate Microsoft Reader?
Many publishers require the highest level of copy protection for their eBooks. Content secured at the Owner Exclusive level requires that you activate your Microsoft Reader before you can purchase these eBooks.
Similar to a bank activation of a credit card, you need to activate Microsoft Reader before you can purchase and read eBooks that are packaged for secure distribution.
Activation is a one-time, one-click process that adds additional software to the Microsoft Reader on your computer. To activate your Microsoft Reader, first obtain a Microsoft Passport account. If you don’t already have a Passport account, the Web site prompts you to create one.

What activation does
Activation associates your Microsoft Passport account with the specific copy of Microsoft Reader on your computer. The activation process downloads a software module to your computer’s memory unique to you and your computer. This software module also uses your Microsoft Passport account number and other information unique to your computer, to protect eBook titles against unauthorized copying.
During the activation process you will download an Activation Certificate. This certificate is a hidden file, which certifies that your copy of the Microsoft Reader can view protected content. It provides you with access to eBook titles that have copy protection for distribution.
The Activation Certificate is encrypted for your own privacy and is only used when you attempt to purchase or download copy-protected titles.

To activate your computer
You must have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later to activate your computer.
To begin activation, point your desktop browser to http://www.microsoft.com/Reader/update and log in with your Passport sign-in name (any Microsoft Hotmail®, MSN® account will do). Then, click Activate.
When activation is complete, the browser displays the message: “Activation components have been successfully downloaded to your computer and are being installed.”

Information collected
When you begin the Activation process, Microsoft Reader first checks to see if you are signed in on Microsoft Passport. Once you are signed in, Microsoft Reader collects unique information about your computer and sends it to a Microsoft Activation Server. The following information is transmitted, but remains secure to ensure your privacy:
A Hardware Identification code, computed using serial numbers and other information unique to your computer.
The version of your operating system (Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows CE, and so forth)
Your Passport account number
You do need to activate MS Reader before you can download DRM laden LIT files.

Good job Andy. You'll find converting to LRF quite easy. And now you have even more books open to you then what Connect sells.
