Best for reading colour PDFs?

Hi, I have been away from these fora for a while, and a quick search didn't turn up anything; apologies if this has already been asked.

I would like to be able to read PDFs in which colour information is critical away from my PC/laptop (example PDF: http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/a...A-H-8083-5.pdf).

Which reader/tablet would be most cost-effective for this? I would not have any other use for it so extra facilities/features would be wasted.

1024x768 pixels, and colour, would be the minimum I would think.

Lexico.

Hi Lexico,

I don't have a comprehensive answer for you as I do not read color PDFs much, but I can say that I was able to open your FAA sample with my iPad, and it looks fine. The TOC is formated properly (although no hyperlinks -- not sure if they were built in). Graphics look good. I do not see any off-doc hyperlinks to check. Landscape and portrait both work.

For less money, consider the NOOK Color. You can make a set of test links available online somewhere, visit a Barnes and Noble store, and see how well they work. I currently consider its ereader PDF support to be fair with pros for rotation and zooming and cons for lacking search, bookmarking, and hyperlink support. I do not have data on its color PDF support in particular but would be interested to hear what you learn.

Hope this helps,

Ken

Very many thanks. I have started looking at the ipad2 -- it seems a bit more affordable than the original version, though rather overkill for what I need.

Had not heard of the NOOK, will investigate ...

Thanks again.

The Nook is only available in the US, so I'm not sure why the previous poster would recommend that to you!

The iPad is an excellent option although is, as you say, a bit pricey. With the iPad 2 going on sale in the UK today, however, you may well find some reasonably-priced 2nd hand iPad 1s, so it's worth keeping an eye out on eBay, or the "Flea Market" forum here.

The Ipad I has been drastically reduced at most retailers in the US to clear the shelves of them...(About 100.00 off the different versions)..Excellent large screen to read PDF's..

Thanks all -- looked at the Nook, but really need 700+ pels width.

Decided that ipad2 at £400 is too much for an e-reader, so am bidding on ipad1s on eBay .. they are coming down in price rapidly, now down to ~ £270 for an 'as new' or 'hardly used'.

Ended up with an Android tablet nine.seven inch 1024*768. So far so good except that the PDF viewer is primitive ... to get to page 200 one has to scroll through 199 pages. Anyone know a better viewer?

Try RepliGo ...

Not sure what kind of tablet you bought or if you have full Android Market accesss, but that one is fantastic for PDFs.
