Your Dead Tree Book Shelves?
Here are mine, for no particular reason other than that I moved and organized them today. I used to have a lot more but have moved a couple of times in the last 6 years and got rid of a lot, gave some to cousins, etc.

I'm making the switch to E-books, because:
1.They don't take up space 2.I like reading them better than paper 3. I can take my entire library with me wherever I go E-books are just so much more function, books are decoration ![]() |

My pbook TBR bookcase in my bedroom cupboard:
http://twitpic.com/4fxm12 (actually, there's a shelf on my display bookcases reserved for TBR's too, but the bulk is above) My ebook TBR-pile is even bigger, but is a soufflé: high but light. |

Mine range from nice pieces of timber furniture to the "Ikea specials" in the spare room. There are about 5 or 6 and all are full! I now have to cull the old paperbacks etc to make room for new books - at least I don't need to buy so many now I have an ereader.
One of my friends has custom built shelves covering a huge wall of his open plan house plus more full height shelves in his office. I am green with envy! |

Mine/our has boiled down to a total of abt 5 shelf-meters, mostly reference and a few given books. When we moved aborad, we gave away some 200 kgs of books, mostly encyclopedia and varoius reference (and quite a few board games). In addition, we threw about 6 or 7 shelf-meters of fiction (that had been read).

We just bought a new tall bookshelf that is the first I've ever had that qualifies as a piece of quality furniture rather than a cheapie utility. Even with ebooks, I still have physical schoolbooks, and my in laws are now passing their P-books to me, since I converted them to ebooks! I can't stand a homeless book, so I take them all, LOL. Anyway, this bookshelf is beautiful.

Don't have a good picture right now, but we're using the Ikea IVAR shelves for our books (some of those parts are over 20 years old...). We've 3 units of 80x180, 5 shelves per unit, filled on both sides (front and back) with novels. And one unit of 80x180, also partly filled on both sides with larger reference books and magazines.
I need at least 3 times as much for our library-to-be to be filled, though... |

My bookcases are still full of magazines - ones that don't readily go onto a reader - also other odds and ends, plants, nick-nacks, study books and cats.

I have 8 floor-to-ceiling bookcases filled with hardcovers, in many instances in double rows. I've been trying to figure out where I could put more bookshelves. Although I am buying a lot of ebooks (e.g., I bought 105 ebooks during eBook Week alone), I still regularly buy hardcovers. My hardcover purchases are primarily nonfiction, but I also buy hardcover fiction from favorite authors such as L.E. Modesitt, Jr., Harry Turtledove, and David Weber, to name just 3.
I'm at that age (in my mid 60s) where I bridge the worlds of print and ebook. I am not willing -- perhaps more accurately, not psychologically capable -- to go exclusively to ebooks; there are still too many unknowns in eBookville. I am willing (with only a few exceptions) to go virtually 100% ebook for fiction, but that's because I rarely reread fiction. I consider fiction to be read-once-throw-away books, so I'm not concerned about the unsettled nature of ebook standards. I feel comfortable believing that 20 years from now I will be able to go to my library shelves and pick up one of my hardcovers and read it. Presumably my grandchildren will also have a clue as to what to do with a print book. I'm not so certain that the the ebook I buy today will be readable 20 years from now without having to be rebought. I suspect that if I were 20+ years younger, I would think differently (or perhaps not care), but I'm not, so I keep a foot in each world. |

I realised that, for me, TBR piles are another "out of sight, out of mind" technique. I rarely read the stuff I set aside, especially with ebooks. There's a ton of new stuff out there, so much so that I forget about the TBR and when I browse through it, it's just "meh, no longer interested".

My mentor in college filled ALL her walls with floor to ceiling books, adding the new shelves as she filled them, bottom to top, to get the maximum space. Nothing decorative; just solid books with no free space at all.
With her outer walls all faced absolutely solid with books, she saved a fortune in heating bills as they are a perfect insulator. I'm sure that after all these years, she has filled up all her inner walls as well. She really was a voracious reader, always with her nose in a book. Stitchawl |

I am jealous of those who have floor to ceiling bookshelves worth of books. All my books that actually survived all my moves are currently in boxes. My bookcases broke in the last move and since were moving again late this year/beginning of next year i havent bothered buying a new one. Once were settled i plan on buying a lot more pbooks. For now ebooks keep me from going insane.
Eta: the tbr bookshelf is a great idea. I just stick the books in with everything else and sometimes i forget about it. Last edited by odiakkoh; 05-03-2011 at 05:14 AM. Reason: eta |

I'm getting rid of all my paper books, except for some large coffee table types. I recently purchased a Sony 350 which will take their place and also be used for library books and guests on extended visits. My primary ereader is a KSO.

Thinking back on old bookcases I've had, after moving out of my parent's house that is. They had 'real' bookcases. I moved around a lot so had many different situations.
Bricks and boards in my hippy days, as well as small wooden barrels (15-20gal?) and boards Steel shelving Wooden shelves with railroad tie uprights Various sizes of orange crates Open lattice of lath, with good engineering Finally real book cases... Now I've gotten rid of most of my paper books, and all that remain can fit into one narrow free-standing bookcase in the front room. But I have thousands of books on my hard drive waiting to go into my Sony. Stitchawl |
