It really astonishes me that stuff like this happens. I've seen businesses (e.g., cafes or restaurants) that had open Wifi, and I guess that's understandable, but for a private home to not secure their Wifi is just frightening to me. Password-protecting your network isn't rocket science.

Don't know what the regs are like in the US these days, but in France those businesses that offer "free wifi" have to have a device that registers the identity of all customers who use the free wifi services and records what sites they visit while using the service. Not sure how long they have to keep the data, but there's a small fortune to be made in selling the boxes that record all that data.

The main point about wi-fi protection : use WPA. Not WEP, or worse, noting. And a long WPA pass phrase to resist attempt with brute force.

Mac addresses can be spoofed, ssid can be found too (Some software DO display networks with hidden ssid). It's useless if someone can listen to what your computer says to the network, and find out ssid or mac address.
High encryption level is what will make your wi-fi safe.
