I grew up with food co-ops and loved the experience. I've been part of an organizing group for a co-op here, and I think we are working at cross purposes. the message they are trying to put forward is that what worked in the 70s doesn't work now. I'm trying to figure out how what a bunch of stoned hippies could pull off in the 70s with little to no business acumen WORKED, and why it can't work now...???

About evry 5 years, we get recruited against our wills. "we need one more person, pleeeeease?"

It is always cheap low-quality packaged foods, weird meats, and far too many frozen green beans.

How are your hinderers causing you headaches?

the issue is....

I *thought* that the idea was to have a co-operative food buying organization form, start buying the food that way, with the goal of eventually opening a store that was cooperatively owned. when I first got involved with them, I was still traveling for work all of the time and wasn't around for the mission statement part. I have come to realize that they their plan is to spring fully formed onto the public with a store. I don't think that will work. they've been banging the drum for almost 4 years now, with a whopping 205 members

That's beyond me, sorry. I just always gave them money, then came back later to get my mystery meat and way too many frozen green beans.

I once had this organic food-subscription at the local green-store. I quit when I found out they imported their pears from Egypt and the beans from Spain and so on.

But if they had something from the local farmers, with goat cheese or honey thrown in like Betty has, I would join in a flash.

it is a "food buying cooperative". there are a lot of different co-ops; for buying seed, harvesting, storing and transporting crops, gas, water, even one of the biggest hardware stores in this country, (Ace) started out as a cooperative. it enables a group of people to purchase with the power of a wholesaler consumable items. hopefully/theoretically they also have a focus (when dealing with food) on local, sustainable, and healthy if not organic food
