Updated books

Hi, everyone.

I'm a novelist producing his own e-books. I recently improved one of them (nicer chapter headers, etc.), and I was under the impression that people who'd purchased it previously for Kindle would get the new edition upon retrieving from archive.

However, that doesn't seem to be the case. Was I mistaken that updates are available to people who bought an older version?

Nook and the iBookstore are starting with the new edition, so it's not an issue there.

Updates are available, but Amazon sends out an email notification that people have to take the time to reply to.

This is due to the way that highlights, notes, etc. are tied to the copy of the book that will be replaced and Amazon doesn't want any more lawsuits for wiping out people's notes without warning. So they make you request the new version explicitly. They really ought to have an "Export Notes to My Clippings" function.

People who haven't bought your book before will get the latest version automatically upon purchase.

Ahh--thanks. Any idea how long that notification takes to be sent? I don't think my test subjects have received it yet.

An updated version of (Book name & ASIN:#) is now available. It's important to note that when we send you the updated version, you will no longer be able to view any highlights, bookmarks, and notes made in your current version and your furthest reading location will be lost.

If you wish to receive the updated version, please reply to this email with the word "Yes" in the first line of your response. Within 2 hours of receiving the e-mail any device that has the title currently downloaded will be updated automatically if the wireless is on.
