What can I get in Bangkok or Hoshimin City?
Hello all,
My father is on an Asian cruise going soon to Bangkok and after that to Hoshimin City. Anyone located over there? Reason why I am asking is that I would like him to get me an ereader but I need to know what models are available over there. I would be interested in Bebook Mini or any ereader that supports EPUB and font scaling, but I have no idea what the offering is over there, In Hong Kong sellers didn't know of Jinke even though it is Chinese company ![]() So something with 5" screen, can be 6" as well. Bebook Mini is cool but I have no idea what clones are available in those countries ( Astak EZ Reader Pocket PRO, Papyre 5.1, LBook V5, ???) Thanks for any help! |

One piece of advice; if you buy in Bangkok forget any thoughts of a warranty. After-care is a foreign word there - yes, I do know how that sounds.
If you possibly can, buy in the country you live in. |

The way these things work is that the big electronics companies put effort into setting up a local agent with a support in your area/country. That same agent gets to do all the importing and therefore gets a cut of the store price. So you can see why, if you buy overseas, the local agent is less than interested in supporting you - since you didn't support them. This isn't an Asian thing. If I buy something in the US and try and get support here in NZ I'll get the same issue.
Still, it is often worth foregoing that support for a cheaper price and if the deal is good enough (ie the price is cheap enough). As long as you know that is what you're doing. I've been in Bangkok recently and there is a huge IT Mall attached to the Fortune City Mercure hotel. It just goes on and on. It had a mix of dodgy looking hole in the wall places as well as quite reputable stores. I saw Apple, Samsung etc there. I think if they have what you want they would have it there. |

Sounds like Panthip plaza.
If you do want electronics in Bangkok that's where to go. You can buy anything you need - and a lot that you've probably never even heard of. |

Strangely I bought a genuine iPhone headset (Strangely because I don't use Apple gear). It was for my boss who had a knock-off one that wasn't working right. He copes less well than I do in these situations so I trotted down to the mall and got one. We were staying in the attached hotel so it wasn't like I had to even figure out where it was. Lots of brownie points for very little effort. I should add that said boss spends about half his waking hours on the phone, the other half he's on a plane. He may have worn out that headset by now.

My father called from Pantip Plaza and said they don't carry any ereaders, only iPads. Weird...

Ummm... my father was there going from shop to shop and even official Sony store and then he called me to inform there are no ereaders there. At least no Sony ones.

That's odd. I wasn't looking for an ereader when I was there so I can't say he's wrong. But they did seem to have the latest of a lot of stuff.

I'm the same. I've never looked for an ereader there but I'm surprised that there's ANYTHING electronic that can't be bought there.
