Greyish Background Buggin me a bit
The Greyish background of the kindle is bugging me a bit. Granted I don't have the best lighting in my house, but it is bugging me more than I thought it would. Obviously the contrast is nowhere near a nice paper back. I am wondering if you get used to this? Also does the nook have a better background? Cause I thought when I looked at it that it was more of a beige.

Don't know about Kindles, but Sony's have a grey background, I think that's the e-ink process isn't it ?
I find it works very well, not tiring on the eyes. I think it might be "Get used to it" time............. |

You could look into getting a good reading lamp. I use something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Trademark-Glob...2802306&sr=8-6 Or a clip on light. |

So maybe that the tip suggested above and get a nice light to read by. I personally do not care for book lights because they are usually awkward to attach, adjust so the illuminate the whole screen evenly, and adjust so as not to be beaming all it's lumens into my eyeballs. I would look at maybe a nice reading lamp or replacing the bulb in the lamps where you like to read with a could of those new daylight CFL bulbs. But even just the soft white bulbs will help a ton if you use stronger bulbs. I'm pretty distracted when the background of my reader is too grey thanks to insufficient light. So, I understand your frustration. But you aren't alone. ![]() |

The odd thing about the Pearl screen is that it benefits greatly from being paired with an LCD light. If you position it so that the intensity is at the maximum but doesn't create a reflection, then the screen acquires a ghostly elegance. You feel as if you're reading the off-white captions in a silent film.
If only the screen remained that shade without direct lighting! |

I like a little brighter background too. This is why I use a Mighty Bright TravelFlex clip-on 90% of the time (just not when under good sunlight or bight office).
(The MiniFlex or XtraFlex2 are best when I didn't have a cover to attach the miniflex. Mini is lighter in weight than the xtraflex, but uses the coin batteries.) I wouldn't want a totally white background, but a well-designed light gives it a boost and better contrast. |

So the old screen type was beige? Cause I swear the nook at Bestbuy is very paperlike beige.

The background on my Nook is kind of a light beige. I have no difficulty reading with it. In fact I find it quite comfortable. I'm going to sound traitorous here. I actually like the light beige background. My Sony & my Kindle are both pearl screen. I have no difficulty reading with them either. My preferred reader is the Sony 350 though. I like the touch screen & the size.

I gave up on e-ink because it is grey.

I currently have a Nook and Kindle (test driving them to see which format I want to stick with). The Nook does have a beige background, which is nice and is more reminiscent of a paperback. However, the major thing that's making me lean more towards the Kindle, is that the Kindle is easier to read in softer light. (I tend to do most of my reading just before bed - and like to keep a bedside lamp on instead of the bright overhead light.) I don't know if it's the grey or the Pearl - but I have to have more light to comfortably read on the Nook than on the Kindle.
Just my 2 cents - hope it's helpful. ![]() |

Not really. But I'm not as sensitive to these things as some people. I find both just as easy to read. But one other thing, my up close vision is excellent & that may be a factor. And I find no difference with the lighting I use either. I guess like TLActor you need to test drive. One thing good about Nook & Kindle, you have a period where you can return them. Same with Sony if you buy from Best Buy & some other outlets.

I like the text of teh kindle a lot. Very sharp. I wish I could have the sharp text of the kindle with the beige of the nook.
