Where do you use it?
I only have just got my sony reader and I am a little edgey about taking it certain places. I broke my last reader, bookeen btw, carrying it in my (packed) hand luggage from holiday so I don't know if I would want to take it on holiday. Even if that wasn't the case I would feel if I wanted to read by the poolside or on the beach I would really want someone to guard it while I swim. I'm a bit worried even to go out onto the street with it and read say on a bench in the fear that I might get mugged (UK user here, chavs everywhere). Am I being too cautious or is everyone like this or at least when you have just got it?
Reading it at home makes me happiest, feel safest there. ![]() |

I live a very quiet life and mostly read in my house...
My daughter on the other hand... She reads on her PRS-350 every day waiting for the bus to work, and then on the bus, and occasionally finishing a chapter while jogging the last 150 yards across the yard from the bus top to the entrance... (Sweden) She's just home from a 6-week backpacking adventure in Costa Rica - Panama - Colombia. PRS-350 in her luggage and used a lot!! She did however bring a couple of paperbacks for the beach reading, since she was traveling on her own and didn't want to leave the Sony unattended while swimming, as you also mention. |

A friend told me to hold on thight on mine when reading in the tube. I never do, hold on thight I mean. I read everywhere and bring it everywhere. It is meant for reading on the go, isn't it?
I was once nicked a Cartier while swimming. Had it for almost 20 years and some silly kid steels it in our club. Well, these things happen when you live your life. And it is only things. So I do not worry. Even though I was not able to replace the Cartier as I don't earn as much as I used to, I bought a watch and it shows the time, so what the heck. Stop worrying and live, life is too short to worry! |

I just took mine to Hawaii and read on the beach there, same with my wife. We left them (in a backpack type bag) with the beach rental folks when we went for a snorkle the one time it caught our fancy and we had the readers with us. I've taken it with me on my motorcycle trips, read in parking lots, service station chairs, etc... pretty much whenever I think I'll have 5 minutes to kill, I'll take mine. But this is Colorado, USA... and I'm a 6'4", 260lb, fully bearded guy who doesn't look like someone to mess with.
![]() If it breaks, I'll buy another one. To this point, I haven't even had a case/jacket/sleeve for mine. |

I use mine everywhere. I take in my purse and read at lunch at work, while waiting at the doctors, once while stuck in traffic while a fallen tree was being removed from the road. I 've used it at the beach the past 2 summers in a protective case with a clear plastic front and it's been fine. I have a pocket in my beach chair and it stays there when I'm not reading. I don't leave it unattended but I wouldn't leave our stuff unattended anyway.

Unless I'm using it, mine is in my purse. It goes everywhere with me. I do use it quite a bit while I'm out and about--have never been overly worried about someone trying to grab it. This is my second Sony--had a 505 for a couple years before upgrading to the 650. My 505 traveled everywhere in my purse as well--never caused a problem.

I carry my 350 in my purse with a case on it. I bought a special purse to carry my e-readers. So I not only read at home but at work, in the car (while waiting for DH), at the doctor's office, at B&N, etc. The only place I haven't whipped it out is at a restaurant. Maybe if I was eating out alone.

I'm wondering what the overlap is between people who steal, and people who would value a black and white reader that doesn't do much but display books? I could see thieves stealing it when they steal a whole purse, but it would go in the trash with everything that doesn't convert to ready cash. Or obnoxious jerks from middle school who would steal it because they consider it their job to torment bookish kids. But stealing it, for itself? I think it's unlikely.
As for reading it on a bench on the street and getting mugged - if the benches are that unsafe, would you really want to allow yourself to be distracted by a reader? Perhaps better to keep your eyes on your surroundings. Last edited by elizilla; 04-06-2011 at 08:40 PM. |

where do you use it?
I am probably just worrying a bit too much, it's new for a start and it's also currently my prize possesion if something happened to it I would be very upset.

Probably after you're more used to having your reader you'll feel more comfortable taking it places. Certainly I would have loved having one on the tube and buses when I lived in the UK.
That said, I've sat on some London benches where I didn't even want my phone out in case someone wanted to take it - but of course it was always easily accessed in case I needed to dial emergency services. |

Personally, I use it everywhere where I would also read a book (and where I would take my phone and wallet). It's great for reading while waiting for the bus, in the bus, sitting in the doctor's waiting room, at home in bed or on the couch, in the car (while someone else is driving), in a hotel, etc.

two outings
Hey so you will probably be happy to know my reader has had two outings now. One was when I was walking, it was in my pocket I had a small rest sat down on a flat rock/step and read a page, no one in sight I'm afraid lol. It also went with me to my studio cycling class today at the gym, was just reading it until the class started. Some lady talked to me asking what I was reading and we had a little conversation.
