I've had it...no more DRM for me!

That's it. From now on, all my books are going to have the DRM stripped out of them. About 2 weeks ago, my ADE started asking me to authorize every time I started the program. I finally maxed out my authorization limit and had to contact Adobe to get my account reset. I asked what was causing the problem, and he referred me to the ADE user forums for help (in other words, we won't help you but maybe one of our customers can ). I ended up uninstalling ADE, and deleting all registry entries and folders pertaining to the program. I reinstalled the program and authorized my account. I closed the program and opened it again...where the setup assistant proceeded to run again, telling me I needed to activate my account. ADOBE STINKS!

As an IT professional, I've never been a fan of their products, this debacle only confirms my distaste. (Don't get me started on their bandwidth chewing auto update that seems to happen weekly. Do you know what it does to your network bandwidth when 250 computers decided to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader all at the same time!!! )

So...Python is my new best friend along with Calibre. Please forgive the rant...I needed to vent. I'm better now...really, I am...can you take this coat off of me...it seems the sleeves are missing....

I installed ADE and Kindle4PC on a VM. I then registered both. And when I buy a book that is DRM infested, I download it on that VS (it's the only reason it gets started), clear the infestation and then move the clean file to my library. I de-installed ADE from my main computer.

Any book that I really intend to keep for good, I strip DRM as soon as I can. I won't and can't make the assumption that I will keep using the same model e-reader for the rest of my life, and that would be the only way to guarantee that DRM would not be a hindrance when you upgrade devices.

As a matter of routine, I strip the DRM off every title I download - I regard this as future-proofing my purchases against the day when I change devices. Funnily enough, I find that an ethical awareness is just as effective as DRM in preventing me being a pirate.

Yeah, rights management software is a hassle, and that is when it is done well and in a seamless fashion. Adobe is not particularly adept, and we all pay for it. Thems the breaks.

I refuse to buy DRMed books. If I can't get it from Smashwords, Baen or another DRM-free outlet, it's off to the Amazon Marketplace I go to get a cheap used copy.

Too bad, too, since buying used means that the authors and publishers get nothing.

Why don't you just email the author for a copy and send him some paypal money or a check?

That would be a thoughtful gesture :-) . My wife's best friend's husband is an author (newspaper editor by day ). I'm sure he would like this idea!

It's more than a thoughtful gesture, its the basis of an economic system that no longer needs the shackles of copyright. I put a paypal donation button in my story when I uploaded it to feedbooks. When I get around to writing my book I'll do the same and then spend all my time on marketing and distribution. Not everyone has paypal or a way to easily transfer funds electronically, but I imagine a good portion of those who write ebooks do, and in the future this portion will only increase.

Also, this gets rid of the need for DRM.
