Huh? I just checked it out yesterday. Downloaded it today and this is what I get when I try to open it in ADE....

No clue what to do about it. I can't return it because I can't open it to start with. If I could return it, I'd just add it to my wait list again. I can't do anything with it.

When I download library books, every once in awhile the download stalls. Usually the book downloads and automatically opens in ADE. But, when it stalls, I have to go find it in the book list and open it.

Is it possible something like this happened to you? And, when you clicked the down arrow to get your menu choices, you actually returned it, rather than opened it?

The return choice is the last one; the open is the first. So it's not super easy to mistake one for the other. But I know in my office, we probably weekly have to go find files/folders that someone has moved into another folder while doubleclicking - their hand just moves more than they thought while attempting to open the file.

Is the book still in your bookshelf at your online library? (If yes, you didn't return it by mistake).

Another thought - is it possible you've downloaded this book before? I wonder if there's an "annotations" file or something tied to the initial (expired) download...?

That last one's a total guess. I know I've redownloaded files that I didn't finish (or just forgot I'd already read).

Contact the technical support people at the library. See if they have the record of the loan. If not, you'll need to check it out again or something.

That's what I was thinking since I have downloaded the book before and it expired prior to my finishing it. I deleted the associated files including annotations file. I redownloaded but got the same message. Now I think it may be a matter of the fact that you can only download 3x once a book's on your bookshelf and I've probably bypassed that by oh....10x trying to figure out what's going on...lol.

I contacted the library today so hopefully, they'll figure it out.

Stupid program probably shoves some marker/timer into the registry (does mac use similar system as registry?)

I'm pretty sure ADE tried to open your OLD copy of the book. Delete it from your ADE book list (this does NOT delete the actual book, just ADE's record of it). Then go find it on your computer and take it back to ADE, making sure it's the NEW version. It should be somewhere like c - users - <yourname> - documents - my digital editions. Unless you have made changes to save it somewhere else.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling ADE. This could mess up your other books, though.

I actually ended up stripping the drm from the book and it opened. I'd never tried it before and had no idea what it was doing but it worked. I did that on Wed. night and yesterday I was able to download and open an unstripped version from my bookshelf so the library must have done something on their end also.
