Thinking of moving from a 700 to a 350 or a 650

I've had a 700 for a couple of years now, and I'm eyeing up a 350/650.

I have no real reason for the 'upgrade', except the desturbing rattle developed after being dropped/bumped once to often.

I was wondering if anyone has directly compared the 700 with the 350/650, does the improved contrast make up for the absence of a built in light?

TIA

Just curious, but are you tempted to branch out from Sony? Or loyal to the brand? Happy with e-ink? Just nosy questions.

I've got to say I've been mostly happy with the 700 so didn't really consider ditching sony. Their software is annoying but i use calibre anyway, and as such buy my ebooks from anywhere.

On the 700~
  • I've liked the touchscreen,
The battery life is very good,
    It feels sturdy,
The built in light works for me, although it eats the charge,

I've never had my hands on a kindle, I've don't really 'get' the point of a keyboard, they look 'plasticy', but the wifi would be nice.

Tablets (of any brand) are (to me) neither one thing or the other. They don't do as much as a laptop, aren't as pocket friendly as a proper ereader.

I am curious as to how much of a difference the smaller screen on the 350 makes to reading though.

EDIT~I luv you Grammar

If you want the light you could just get the lighted case for the 350 or 650.

Having moved from a long-loved 700 to a 650 I can honestly say you will love the change. I thought I'd miss the light but found the other features very much outweighed the minor loss. Going back to my 700 these days makes my eyes want to bleed with the glare (I always thought it was such a minor issue). The new zoom methods and "page locking" have also turned out to be invaluable.

I can't recommend the switch more.

I upgraded from a 505 to a 350 about 3 weeks ago when they went on sale. I was worried about the screen size, but couldn't stomach the extra $100 for one inch. I haven't actually noticed much difference while reading, and the extra clarity is noticeable.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm leaning towards the 350 over the 650; i don't use the audio or the expansion slots on the 700 so wouldn't miss them on the 350, I just have to decide if the screen size loss would be that much of an issue.

I've found most books can be read in Small size, after using the (new) "margin cut" feature,
so the 350 should be fine for you.

IMO the higher resolution makes up for the screen size loss.
Unless you need a MASSIVE text size, then I can't see that 1" helping.

Did the 700 have the same type of screen as the 600? If so, the x50s kick it's butt. A huge difference and worth the upgrade.

Re: light, get the lighted cover or a standard cover and a mighty bright travelflexx (takes 1 AAA).

I went down from a 6" reader to the 350 and I couldn't be happier! The size is perfect. You won't notice the smaller screen as the clarity of screen and the high dpi enable you to read one size smaller than normally. Bought a lighted case, just in case , too. It even slips into my evening purses.

The 350 is my Valentine!!

Oh yes, the new Sonys are a huge improvement over the 700, in terms of clarity alone. And the new touchscreens are SO good. Like the difference between and ice box and a refrigerator.

I bought the lighted case for my 650 and it's much much better than the lights around the 700, IMO.

The new models are just a great improvement all around.

I say go for it! You won't be disappointed.

My husband had an old 700 laying around the house and I picked it up the other day. Couldn't believe the glare/low contrast and that he put up with reading on that for so long. I absolutely love my 650 and my husband loves his as well. And one of my favorite features is the integrated dictionary. I'd really miss that if I had to go back to one of the older models.

I do have the lighted case for my 650--and love it. It doesn't really add that much bulk to the reader--and as pendragginp says it really is much better than the lights in the 700.
