Why is it that people can be so blunt?

Have you ever been asked curly questions and not known how to react?

The next time you are caught out, control your temper and reply,

"Why are you asking"?

Watch the reaction of that person

Most will back off. IF they still remain adamant that they want an answer, politely ask them this,

" Why..have you experienced this? "

I've never heard the term "curly question" before, but from the context, I'm assuming you mean asking something that is grossly inappropriate. Could you clarify that and graphically describe your genitalia?

NativeJenni, I know exactly what you mean. I live in Asia and I have to say the people I know and have met don't have the same social filter to control the conversation that I grew up with. For the first while I was very offended and had a few words with people I thought were just being rude. After awhile I understood the filter thing, now I do exactly what you suggested and ask them why they want to know, it works most of the time, because they think it is very rude for me to ask????

Anyway, I was asked by someone I had just met if I was <Edited to preserve some privacy> or not, no she wasn't interested in sex, but rather religion. I was so shocked I didn't say a word and walked away. She was a good friend of my wifes so I couldn't be to rude.

My guess as to why it was butchered can be found in this statement:

Having never heard the phrase 'curly questions', my lack of tact immediately led me down the wrong path.

It is well known in North America that I have little tact (if any...), that I am uncouth, a dipsomaniac, a lover of good cigars, and an all-around despicable character!

A lot of this can be down to cultural differences. Subject which are "taboo" in one society can be openly discussed in others.

I think there are some things that no matter where you are would be considered rude or tasteless.

"So, hows yer wife go, eh?

"so how's, you know. nudge nudge wink wink, know what I mean?"

"How much money do you make?"

"That your ugly kid?"

Just a few I have heard and don't care what planet you're from they are rude.

I must respectfully disagree. I know several people who wouldn't be the least offended about discussing how much money they make.
