Unhappy charging/switching on and other problems

Hello all,
I have a PRS-300 which I've owned for just over 18 months.
She's always been temperamental. And she's actually my second unit- I took the first back after 2 days because it just wouldn't work.
Currently she won't charge/switch on or reset. I'm getting flashing amber lights and I can access the memory through the computer. When I plug her in she gives me a red light for about 10 minutes and then goes off. She refuses to switch on and the screen has a few odd lines on it which are not changing apart from the occasional flicker (when I plug it in or the amber light comes on).
Is she beyond fixing? My arm feels like it has fell off!

My friend has a PRS300 which has caused her some annoying problems as well. Hers just wouldn't charge ... and we sent it back to Sony. Sony charged the battery and sent back the AC charger for that model. Plugged into the wall the unit charges well. The AC charger does not utilize the USB port ... but plugs into the a hole nearby. I don't know if these are available in the stores ... but certainly Sony has them. They sent this charger to my friend for free by the way. I read that as indicative of its being more reliable to charge via AC than the computer.

My friend, however, doesn't seem to realize that the "charge bars" are not to be trusted. I've told her she needs to charge the book when it gets down to half way, because the unit seems to become glitchy when the battery is low.

I have no idea how long a charge should last on the PRS300 ... but it's probably of shorter duration than my PRS650.

Hope this helps ...

Mary

Thanks Mary, I've contacted Sony for help. you're right about the glitchy thing though- the only times I've had problems with it is when the battery is low. I'll have to keep charging it once it's working again.
