It's just come to my attention that the dictionary in the WiFi Kobo only seems to work on the pre-loaded books- not on side-loads, and not even on a book purchased from the kobobooks site. Surely, that's a bug?

This is really a stupid thing ! I will not buy from them and let Kobo representatives here know that I m not buying from them because of that silly behavior.

Jar Jar and erictoma, I still really like my kobo though. It does everything I want it to do. The dictionary isn't high on my list of important things; in fact, I hadn't even noticed that particular bug until erictoma's other thread. And I've found kobo's customer service really great, at least here in Canada. I fully expect them to fix the current bugs in their next firmware release (which is why I started this thread, to bring the problem to the attention of the kobo techies).
So in spite of the bugs, I'd still recommend the kobo. I have no experience with other readers, but I'm not sorry I got a kobo vs. one of the other machines. |

In another thread, someone said that kobo format only "comes across" if you load it via the desktop app? I don't use the desktop app (can't, my Mac's too old), only ADE. I wonder if that's why the dictionary doesn't work on the kobo-bought book I have?

Yep, that would be it. You would have downloaded the .acsm file to ADE, and it would have downloaded and copied over a standard encrypted epub file. So - no dictionary access to epub files, no matter which store they come from.

more than likely, because loading the books onto the kobo via ADE, even purchased books, are still sideloaded, which the dictionary does not work with.

Yes, the renderer (which decrypts as part of the process of running the dictionary) currently only does its magic on kepub formatted books. Not sure if a change could be made to decrypt using two different DRM schemes, though decrypting non-DRM books would (theoretically) be more possible. I'm not counting on that happening any time soon.

![]() And way to go for trying to learn better English- it works (did I mention English isn't my first language, either? I did the same as you, I made a real effort to learn it. Now people can't even tell any more that I didn't grow up in Canada.). I also think you're really smart checking out this stuff before you buy. ![]() |

But after Tamy explanation, I have changed my mind. She said that the dictionary works also on free ebooks from Kobo, which is great for improving English vocabulary without paying a cent. Relying on free ebooks from local libraries would not be good for me, because they don't support the built dictionary and secondo most of their ebooks are literallyrubbish. ![]() You have you solved your bug. ![]() Last edited by erictoma; 12-03-2010 at 03:42 PM. |

I really hope Kobo gets a bit more out of it's product with the next firmware update. Dictionary, better bookmarks, slight speed improvement, jump to page, etc would make it a top tier reader.

The dictionary works with any book in kepub format. It does not "catch" plurals, but I have been told they are looking at that for the next wifi update. Go-to pages are already in the 1.9 WiFi update. I have no idea if the original kobo will get that at not.
