Unhappy New affiliation ?

Well, it's happened......

A major UK bookstore, initially the "store of preference" I suppose, for Sony Readers, Waterstones, has apparently / allegedly "dumped" the PRS650.

Too pricey, too much trouble, not enough support from manufacturers, or what, I don't know.........

But, their ereader sales section has a quite a few makes, including the PRS350 "Pocket" but no mention of the "flagship" 650.

And the section heading kicks off with a picture, followed by :-

" eReaders from £69.99

iRiver EBO5W Wi-Fi Touch Screen eReader.
Introducing our most advanced eReader ever... The wi-fi enabled Cover Story from iRiver is a heavyweight eReader with a featherweight design, weighing in at just 233 grams. Not only can you browse and download eBooks directly from Waterstones.com onto the device but it also boasts a host of advanced features.... " etc.....

Unless it's an undercover Sony, that is...................

I really wouldn't read any sinsister machinations into it. Sony Stores in the UK have also dropped the 650. It just doesn't seem to be available any more.

Waterstones sell a very wide range of readers; they've sold iRiver devices for at least a couple of years now.

I was wondering about the Cover Story. In its video it looks smashing and the screen seems to be really matte and fingertouch responding. Is it as good as I think? Have you seen one yourself? I ask because I wouldn't mind adding one to my collection, too.

We can't seem to get it here in the US either. Even sonystyle is out and none at the sonystyle store locally. Oddly enough I could get one from my bank using points, but I am leary of the idea of getting a device that is on the outs.

I have seen the display in person at an LG booth at a show. I havent seen the Cover Story in person

But from everything I have seen or read iRiver has incorporated many of the things I like about other readers.

The compact design with the controls on the side as seen with the Irex, PocketBook 360 and Next Papyrus PageOne. The page flip bar from the Irex. The integrated cover of the PocketBook 360 .

Plus they offer the covers in other colors for personalization, its got auto rotate, wide format support including office formats, on board dictionary of course. And it has email functions Plus pen input. Their "post it" method of making notes and connecting them to the text seems a good method.

Yes, what I saw on the internet looks great and good value for the money, too. If I only could see it personally somewhere I'd be for sure temped quite hard to buy it.

BTW, there is a newbie on the board looking for a reader that can read Russian and is available for him to buy in the US. Maybe you can have a look at it and help him.

oh and ive just seen that Waterstones apparently has it on sale. Im not sure about non glare display. It does appear to be a resistive touch and not the capacitive I saw in LGs booth

I've seen it on a display stand, didn't have time to play with it , but the one I saw looked white , and plasticy if you know what I mean - I'll try to 'vestigate further tomorrow.......
It certainly hasn't got the sleek engineered look of the sony's,
but, at that price .......

could hit Kindle as well ?
Is that why the K prices have dropped I wonder...
