63 Year old mother has a Nook on the way
Hello everyone. My mother bought a Nook Wi-Fi tonight from B&N.com It would be her first ereader. She looked at my Kindle 3 and the Nook side by side and likes the touch screen better on the Nook for her use saying that it is easier to use. She also likes the fact that you can check out library books on it whereas I can not do that with my Kindle. I will end up being her tech support and such, so is there anything that I need to know about the Nook to get her up and running? She just bought the Nook, no case or SD card. Thanks for the help.

Good for your mother! How exciting! My mom has a Sony ereader and really likes it. Since your profile says you have a Kindle, then you should be able to provide decent tech support just because many things about ereading go across brands. I would download the user guide and maybe watch some of the videos at the B&N website to become familiar with the Nook. You could also visit a B&N or Best Buy and play around with the demo unit.
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/support/index.asp Some libraries have tutorials on their websites which explain how to download ebooks and transfer them to your device. I would visit her library website and see if there is something like that to read about how it works. Of course there is always MobileRead to help answer questions that you can't figure out on your own. ![]() |

How conversant are you in information technology? First the SD card comes in two different varieties: SD and SDHC, he additional HC stands for high capacity, all ereaders are configured to read SDHC format. SDHC comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 1gb to 16gb these days are are also clasified according to class the higher the class number the faster the card is. Does your mother like to save the books on the card for future use or will she be deleting the ones that she has read? If she will be deleting then a 8gb should do it, but if she is a pack rat like me then the 16gb or perhaps 32gb will be needed.
The books themselves come in a variety of different formats of which the two major ones are PDF and epub. You will need to check with the manual to see which formats your reader can support. If you intend to get PDFs then you will be forced to get them from B&N, not a big restriction. If you get epub you can get them from just about anywhere you want. The library books you will need to make sure that they are in epub format. If you download a book from Amazon or Borders Books you will need to make sure that you buy them in epub format so that your reader can use them. Cases for the readers are sold separately. Your mother should get in the habit of charging her reader when she goes to bed so that it will be ready for her to use in the morning. This is a quick overview of what you will need to know. |

Thank you for the help and as far as I know she would not be rooting the unit. She is not tech savy so she will have to be shown how to put books on the device and buy books through B&N, etc. Just curious, can you root the e-ink screen Wi-Fi version, and if so what is the purpose and what can you do?

Some things to keep in mind:
The touch screen is great but DOES take some getting used to. She will probably get frustrated, but that's normal. After a week or so it'll be no problem. Tell her to read the user's manual. It's 167 pages of nothing but fun (not really) but it's full of info! The micro SD card isn't necessary. The device will hold 1500 books as is. When she sets it up, make sure she has a default address and default credit/debit card on her BN.com account. Some have them on there but not as default. She should be fine since she bought it online. Keep the packing slip just in case. In the event of any defect, rare as they are, the unit can be taken to a store. The stores are your friend. The 1-800-THE-BOOK is not. Even if you can't drive to it, call a local store and ask to talk to someone if you have any questions or issues. There should be someone in the middle of the day, every day, who's running the nook counter and can help you or your mom out. Hope that helps! ![]() Last edited by jedifarfy; 01-11-2011 at 01:05 PM. |

That info does help. We have two B&N stores nearby. One is 5min away and the other 10.

It may seem silly to have to say it: But check her library account and make sure it's current. 'Get in line' for the books she wants on the online library. Install the software she'll need for the library on her PC for her. |

For getting library books, it isn't just a matter of getting epub files, as mentioned in a thread above. You have to install and use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on a PC, as mentioned in the link above, in the section concerning library books.
This can be confusing at first, because you first download a little file from the library, open it with ADE, and then ADE does the download of the actual book. After the download, the book will be in the ADE organizer, but you must then connect your Nook and then within the ADE organizer drag and drop the book onto the Nook to get it to transfer from the PC to the Nook. It takes some effort till you get the hang of it. |

That is a great idea for her to maybe find a class. There is not one offered for her Nook Wi-Fi, only the Nook Color in our area.

That's too bad. We've been incorporating both nook styles into our classes because both were quite popular still for the holidays. Well, someone should be there for her if she has any questions at least.

My mother is enjoying her Nook Classic. She only has one complaint and that is lighting. She needs to buy a case for it and with that a light. She says it is hard to see in low light, which we all know that. We will look into a case that she may like as well as a light. I only know of the cases from B&N in the store so far to look at.

That's great news, s1mp13m4n! Thanks for letting us know.
Do a google or amazon.com search and there are loads of options for Nook Classic cases. There are probably several threads on MR too. I know many people like the M-edge cases, especially the ones that are compatible with the M-Edge e-Luminator2 light. The light is an optional accessory. The cases typically have a slot that the light fits into. I have two different clip-on lights for my ereaders. The Capstone "eBook Lite" from Target that clips at the top of the ereader and also the Book Owl light from the checkout area of Borders which clips to the side of the ereader. |
