Help!

Because my husband is out of town for a month with the laptop that I have been using to download library ebooks to my Sony 350, I have installed the Reader software on our desktop. I have downloaded a library book to the Reader Library. However, when I try to transfer it to my Reader, I get this message "This ebook cannot be transferred because the Reader is authorized to another user."

Please can someone help solve this?

Did you register the Reader Library Software using the same credentials as the account you have on the laptop?

I think that I did. How would I find exactly how I registered the Reader?

You need to open up eBook Store from the software. Sign in using the same user name and password that you use on your laptop. Then Select My Account at the top. Then in the My Devices section select Manage/Rename Devices. It will show all the devices assigned to your account plus the option to add your computer if you have not already done so.

Hoyt, I did that and it made one difference. All the books on my Reader now show up in the software; however, I still get the same message when I drag the new library book to the reader.

Now that your PC authorization is fixed, you need to re-download the books from your Overdrive library account.

Go to your overdrive account using your web browser and bring up your listing of checked out books and download them again.

You may need to delete the library books that will not transfer from your reader library on the PC first, but don't 'return item' just delete them, otherwise you may loose the book on Overdrive if someone else has it reserved.

When you downloaded them originally it was to a PC whose authorization did not match your reader, so now there is no way to fix them without downloading them again. This time when you download them, since your PC is now correctly registered, they should transfer to your reader without problems.

Try deleting the book from the Reader library and the Reader library folder (don't Return Borrowed Item!) and open it now that you've authorized that computer.

I use Adobe Reader, using Overdrive to download library audio books--don't ask me why--that's just what I did when I bought my Sony (which I use only for library ebooks and audio books.

I've done everything that everyone has recommended, but I still get that message. If I hadn't heard everyone talk about how customer-unfriendly Sony is, I would call someone there. And I may yet. To be honest, if it were Amazon, I would have called immediately.

Any other thoughts?

And thank you all for trying to help.

Can you use Adobe? If you're not using a Mac, with your reader connected, right click on the acsm file and select open with ADE. When the book has downloaded, drag it to the reader icon.

No. The book only shows up on the Reader Library, not Adobe. I also checked out and downloaded another library book to be sure that the book wasn't the problem.

Open Adobe, When in Library view choose Add item to library, navigate to Readers Library folder if that is where the books are (probably c:/user/username/My Books/Reader Library and add the books to Adobe and then drag them to the reader.

If this doesn't work it's probably because you haven't activated Adobe to the correct account. Deactivate it and reactivate it. Both the computer and the device, if needed. Instructions found on and copied from a Wiki somewhere on this forum (Kobo section by the looks of it - I already had i copied in another document...):

How can I deauthorize a Kobo (or other) device using ADE?

PC instructions:
Open ADE on your pc, connect the Kobo to the pc. Then press Ctrl,Shift, E. You should get a box asking of you want to deauthorize, select yes.
Unplug your Kobo from the computer, and plug it in again. Now you should get a box saying that a new device has been detected and you can authorize it.

How can I deauthorize a a computer using ADE?
PC instructions:
Open ADE on your pc. Then press Ctrl,Shift, D. You should get a box asking of you want to deauthorize the computer, select yes. ADE will close.
Open ADE again. Go to library view. Click on the drop down "library" menu. Choose "authorize computer"

Update! Thanks to the Sony Support, my problem is fixed. If I had been able (techology-knowledge-wise) to follow some of your directions, it might have already worked. According to an email I received from Sony, the problem had to do with different email addresses between the Sony ereader store, Adobe, and the Free Library of Philadelphia. I don't quite understand this since I gave one email address when I first got my reader (the one that I let junk email go to) and my most-used email to the FLP. Then, since we moved, last week I changed my email with the FLP. After receiving the email, I went crazy changing and playing around with different email addresses. All that happened then was that I got different messages with no successful transference of book to Reader. Then, FLP wouldn't even let me download.

After calling the Sony Support number, we changed things (don't even ask me exactly what). Now, I can't get the book that I had waited for several weeks, but I now have a book, B is for Beer (first one that I could grab and check-out) on my Reader. Good to know that (other than missing that other book or getting back in a long line) everything is back to normal).

Thanks for all the advice. Guess I shouldn't have listened to all the trashing of Sony Support and should have called them earlier.

Glad it worked out! I've never had a problem with Sony support. I bought a 505 from eBay and when I got it wouldn't charge. I called Sony to troubleshoot and they sent me a new one.
