Difference in contrast between x50
I currently have the PRS 950, 650 and 350. And looking closely, displaying a book with the same font, it seems to me the bigger the screen, the lesser contrast it has. Actually the difference between the 950 and 650 is bigger than the one between 650 and 350. The latter could be explained by the difference in DPI which is greater on the 350, making the text look sharper and overall easier to the eye.
The 650 casing is black while the 950 casing is gray. The darker the case, the whiter the background seems, but it seems to me there is more to it. So my question is pretty simple : has anyone the 950 and another of the PRS series to confirm / infirm the difference in contrast ? I have another question : I installed boroda's firmware and PRS+, and using the same userStyle.css, the presentation of the text is not exactly the same between the 950 and 650, despite their screens having the same width. See the picture below : the beginning paragraph on the 650 has on more word compared to the same paragraph on the 950. Anyone has any idea why ? |

I checked the contrast between my 950 and my friends kindle because it seemed to have considerable higher contrast. What I did was cut some big holes in a sheet of paper and placed it over both readers so that I could only see the screen itself and I couldn't tell any difference. Apparently the darker border makes it seem like the contrast is greater when as far as screens go it isn't. You ought to try that and see what you think. I can't comment on the fonts.

There are many who would have preferred the 950 in black. I ordered a DecalGirl skin with a black background, and it does help to improve the contrast. I got one with a pattern over the black background. However, you can custom order solid black matte too.

Thanks for the replies. In fact I already ordered some skin from Decalgirl on iStyles, a plain black matte one for the 350 and a black matte one with a few white letters for the 950. I should receive them in a few weeks, I hope I will be able to do a clean paste of the skin on the device (else I probably will be obsessed by the flaws) !
I also modified the css file to increase the font size to 150% which makes the font look stronger on the 950, increased the contrast to 25 and decreased brightness to -25, and it looks good. |

There is a thread on DecalGirl skins for the 950. It has some suggestions and video link on how to apply the skins. Mine turned out really well. Just remember to take your time and go slowly. I started at the bottom buttons on the front and worked my way up and then on to the back.
Some people also like to call out the bold font file in the CSS as their font-family regular style to improve contrast as well. Just another idea to keep in mind. |

When you place the skin around the buttons, make sure the cutout is far enough away from them, or they can be hard to press. I made that mistake with the decal for my 350 and had the top edge too close to the 2 buttons on the left side, and while they still worked, it annoyed me enough to have to remove the skin and replace it so the buttons were free moving again.
It stretched the skin out a bit while pulling it off, but I was still able to get the original skin back on with the only slight flaw of a tiny bit more silver showing around the text area from being stretched out. On first application I had virtually no silver visible at all. |

Bookworm_Girl, Ripplinger : thanks for the tips. I found a few threads about decalgirl skins and the 950, but found no video though.
It's a bit late now that I ordered the skin, but I just thought about actually disassembling the device and paint the front case in matte black and the buttons in some less shiny color...I don't care much about warranty since I don't live in USA, maybe that would make an eventual sale of the device in the future difficult though. I'll do it if I totally mess the placement of the skin, or if I don't like the tiny silver edge that, from what I read, stays after the placement of the skin. |

Papi, I watched the video in this post. It's for the Nook, but it was still helpful for the general procedure.
