If they're afraid of a domination of the ebook industry by a few major entities... join the club. However, ebooks are probably the most monopoly-proof of products, especially since their digital state means geographic restrictions can be rewritten/removed, and since most reading devices can read anybody's ebooks. In that case, their only concern is how to maintain their place in the digital market. There are multiple outlets, and they can sell through their own portals. They have the means to advertise their stock, so this shouldn't be a big problem.

As to the desire for print and digital to coexist: That sounds like a desire to keep the status quo, while adding ebooks to it. I think they'd better rethink that one.

They may have to down the road, but at the moment, that is what's happening. Paper books aren't going away any time soon, and I don't expect them to go away entirely at all.
