Cheap Kids Chapter Readers?
I'm getting my 6-year-old daughter an eInk Nook for her birthday. She loves reading chapter books like Fancy Nancy and Junie B Jones and really wants an eReader. I'm going to pre-load the Nook with some books from B&N but with few exceptions they're kind of pricey compared to just buying them used off of Amazon like I usually do. I'm wondering if anyone has a source for relatively cheap chapter readers (or maybe some eBook collections for sale) that will load on the Nook (or can be converted with Calibre)?

What do you mean by "chapter books"? That's a term that I'm unfamiliar with.

It's a book that has multiple chapters.
![]() It's the transition from 10-20 page "stories" to full-fledged novels. Beginning books are short enough that the entire book is essentially a single chapter. Chapter books will be longer (40+ pages), will have a real plot and character development, and, as a result, have chapter breaks, just like grown-up books. |

Do you have access to a library with ebook lending, so they would be free? Of course, they have to go back at the end of the lending period; you can't keep them.
Philadelphia and Singapore have libraries non-residents can join. My library seems to have tons of YA and juvenile books. You'll have to check that you have access to lots of appropriate books before making a decision. |

I noticed that our library had all the magic tree house books etc so looking at your library as suggested above would be a good option. I have also found them at kobobooks and it seems to me the prices were reasonable. I keep a few books on my reader for my oldest son who reads chapter books.

The Magic Tree House books go on promotional pricing sometimes so keep an eye out. Right now there is one (Eve of the Emperor Penguin) that is $.95 on Nook.

Thanks for the tip, elemenoP. I'll look out for those sales.
The library where we're moving to (Grapevine, TX) has Overdrive and NetLibrary. It looks like Overdrive only has 1 Magic School Bus title and little else for that age group. Does anyone know what NetLibrary offers? I apparently can't search their catalog without a login. |

Singapore Library has these Magic Tree house books mentioned and nearly 3000 childrens books alltogether. I can not say how many are for a 6yr old but the Library is for free anyway. Tipp: Do not wait for an email to come when you enroll, it will never happen. Just give a number code and a nickname and you are fine.

What price do you consider to be a reasonable price for a children's chapter book?

My nephew has one of my old readers and loves reading on it. As for pricing when I bought him some Junie B books they were $3.74 from the Kinde store (I'd guess B&N has similar pricing?) while a used copy priced at $0.01 will still cost you $4 with shipping. If you can find the used books locally it's unlikely a "new" digital copy is going to compete price wise with a used pbook. |

Just4kix, I think $1.50-$2.50 is right around ideal for me. That's what they run at the used book store in my current town (and I'll miss that place when I move). It's also roughly the price per book I end up paying for the used Prime-eligible single books and boxed sets I get online. I was hoping to maybe find whole collections for sale at a discounted price but it looks like those just don't exist yet for eBooks.
AnemicOak, I get that selection will depend on the library but I'm surprised NetLibrary doesn't even let you look at what's available for a particular library without already being a member. Such a limitation doesn't stop Overdrive. |

NetLibrary at my local library is a lot of non-fiction PDF stuff, don't know if they offer other stuff or not.
