Library Exchange for Epub/pdf Books?
I was wondering if MR members could do some sort of library exchange for epub books to find stuff they are looking for.
When you take out an epub or pdf, you are given a .acsm (adobe content server manager) file to download. You open this file in Adobe Digital Editions which then downloads the file. If I took out a book and emailed someone the .acsm file without opening it myself, I believe their ADE would download the book with the proper time restrictions. That way we could get books from libraries we don't belong to. Of course it will only work if people all help each other out. I'm willing to give it a try, if someone wants a book from either the Henderson or Las Vegas library systems: http://mypubliclibrary.lib.overdrive.com/ http://ebooks.lvccld.org/ Both have sadly limited epub offerings, but Las Vegas has a ton of pdfs. -Marcy |

There was no huge terms or EULA form I needed to agree to, to sign up. But if I take out a library book, I can certainly lend it to someone else, although the responsibility is mine if it isn't returned.

Great idea, get a book exchange going.
I don't really see where the copyright problem should be an issue. I download a book, its paid for, you download a book, its paid for. Each book is read once, by one person, artist/publisher have both been paid for us (by us through taxation) to have the use of their intellectual property. |

It's interesting that you mention downloading the book and not opening/reading it, could I not imagine myself downloading every book in existence and then visualize sharing these books with the world? The answer is YES. ![]() |

I have already tested this with another mobileread member in Europe. We discovered:
a- It works. b- Once one of us uses the .acsm file, the other cannot download the book, i.e. each .acsm file can only be used with one copy of ADE. I'm sure there are those that will sit and try and find everything wrong and say this is immoral. It's taking out a library book temporarily and on an exchange basis. You take something out of my library that isn't available in yours and vice versa. It has all the same restrictions as if the original person had taken out the book, including the time restriction. The only possible moral negative I see is the argument that the book now is temporarily unavailable to other library patrons. If we agree to avoid books with long waitlists this shouldn't be an issue. If you are interested in trying pm me. If you are interested in ripping this apart as immoral and stealing feel free. -Marcy |

If it works, the next question is: can this be used to work around geograpic restrictions?
Person A wants a book Person B buys the book, and sends the .acsm file to person A Person A opens the .acsm and downloads the book (I guess GR are not triggered here) Person B cannot download the book (otherwise, it's not an "exchange") Person A pays person B (a bank transfer, a gift code, another book...) |
