What is navigation like on a bible on the Kindle? I've been wanting to get one so I don't have to carry a Bible around with me ON TOP of a Kindle... but I'm really worried about what navigation is like. It seems like you flip pages so much in the Bible - you don't read it cover to cover. How does that translate to the Kindle?

Precisely. KJV is not a public domain publication in the UK because it holds a Crown copyright (basically, the Queen holds a copyright for this translation).

Teadonkey, the Bible navigation on the Kindle is quite simple and convenient once you learn it. Good publishers offer Active TOC which allows you to jump from the TOC straight to the book, and then verse in mind.

I still use my hard copy Bible but my husband has completely switched to the Kindle one. He usually finds verses much faster than I do .

I do second Amanda3's recommendation - we have that particular Bible version on our Kindle, it's very well-done. Another version we use and like is this, but it takes a bit longer to learn to navigate but after a while it is very convenient. You can download samples for both of them and just see how they feel on your Kindle.

it amazes me that the very fist printed book and in the public domain for millenia is still sold -- worse, licensed. Bizarre.

here's a lot of free editions from Project Gutenberg:

Some of the reviews say that they are missing verses and even whole chapters? Is that people just not knowing what they're talking about? I've seen that version before and considered it, but reviews like that make me question either the book or the reviewer.

teadonkey, I am not sure about the specific reviews you are talking about but I offer the same version and received similar reviews accusing me of typos (divers, and not diverse) and deleting whole chapters and verses. Amazon even emailed me and threatened to pull the publication if I do not fix the "mistakes." I told them that I would rather take it down myself than presume to revise a translation of the Bible.

I am all for legitimate criticism; however, I think some people are lazy to investigate before they write a review.

First, this version is 400 years old (with some updates along the way). That's how they spelled "divers" as the time.

Second, this Bible follows Septuagint/Vulgate chapter and verse numbering, which is not the same as KJV-type numbering. For example, somebody quickly looked at Psalm 119 in my Douay-Rheims and said that many verses are missing. Well, wrong psalm! Psalm 119 in KJV, NIV, etc. is Psalm 118 in Douay-Rheims, Vulgate, Septuagint, Russian Synodal Translation, etc. Douay-Rheims was actually a translation of Vulgate Clementina. It follows Catholic numbering (although American Catholics switched to KJV numbering in some versions). More about different Bible chapter/verse numbering systems is on my blog.

These reviews are like drive-by shooting. You can't talk to people and explain that they made a mistake.

UPDATE: You actually maybe talking about the reviews for my version. I see that Mozaika posted a link.

I don't think it's bizarre. There are tons of free Bibles. I actually think the ones done by Mobileread members and offered here are much better done than the gutenberg. I can't speak about other paid editions but I think that my versions offer better formatting and navigation than the free ones. So, everyone is free to choose. I even raised this issue on my blog to see what others think. You may read it here.

Ah, thank you for clarifying. I know there are like, I don't know, a bajillion different bibles floating around right now. (Went to the Christian store the other day, they have a 'Bible for Electricians', no joke.) But when it comes to differences between them, I only know what makes a bible a Catholic bible. Thanks for your answer!

Do you think it'd be terribly confusing for me to have a D-R on my Kindle and an NAB physical bible, and switching between them? I want one on my Kindle for easy on-the-go reading, but I like having the physical one to leaf through.

Sorry, teadonkey, I missed your question. Better late than never. There not that many places that differ; so, it is easy to learn when there is a difference (Psalms mostly). Personally, I like comparing different translations sometimes I see a different perspective or the meaning of a verse finally gets to me that I have been missing because I am too familiar with how it is written in my favorite Bible translation.
